    Question quick "?"

is it okay to have an overhead light with a bp, not to heat, just to see inside the tank at night?

An overhead viewing light is fine, however you don't want it on at night. BPs are nocturnal, and it's stressful for them to have a light on them all night.

An alternative is a red light bulb. Reptiles don't see red light like we do, so you can still view your snake at night without stressing him out.

A bright, white light shining directly in the cage can be a source of stress. Try to angle it so it's not a direct beam into the cage...or diffuse it in some way. A fluorescent bulb would be good, because it's neither bright nor direct, but provides plenty of viewing light.

The other thing you could do is just install a dimmer dial on either a table lamp or a ceiling fixture in the room your snake lives in. That way you could have a light on but adjust it nice and low so that it would allow you to see your snake but not have a bright light right on it.
