    Dumbo and blue/grey genetics.

Awhile back I rehomed my dumbo blue female. Well, the little girl had to go to the vet awhile after that and her vet said that many dumbo blue/grey rats are prone to sickness due to inbreeding. I'm always up to learn something new, I was just wondering what you guys had to say on the subject.

I don't remember where I read it, but on a rat dedicated site, I did read that blues have health issues due to inbreeding. There are ratteries that breed for pet stores and the blues at least are desirable and pet stores sell them for more (look at Petsmart) and that since it's recessive - they tend to inbreed more to get them.

Very interesting Robin, I admit my rat gentics isn't as up to par as my equine and reptile.

Not sure if this is the information Robin was thinking of but it does talk about bit about the breeding of Blue rats and some issues.....

    Re: Dumbo and blue/grey genetics.

Haven't posted for a while but had to when I saw this thread. There are at least two different alleles responsible for blue rats. One is d/d which is a simple recessive and modifies or rather dilutes(hence the d) black to a russian blue. The other is what most breeders refer to as american or slate blue which is also a simple recessive. I would imagine it would depend on the breeder and how inbred a particular line is, therefore blue rats would not inherantly have any more health issues than say, a siamese. That is just silly.

    Re: Dumbo and blue/grey genetics.

Well to be fair I never asked her to grill her vet about the other 'in' rat colors

I do know that inbreeding tends to be more destructive on mammals compared to say ball pythons or corn snakes. So wouldn't even two or three generations of inbreeding cause defects?

Thanks for posting Holly, always good to have other educational posts.
