keeping rats together.
I have a 20 gallon long, and wanted to know how many rats i could keep in it. I am getting the African Soft Furred rats, which are pretty small, here is an ad with a picture of a full grown adult
http://market.kingsnake.com/detail.php?cat=28&de=464371
(that is who i'm actually ordering from, pfan191, as he's known here).
I was going to start with 2, but would like three, do you think i could safely put 3 in there?
Thank you!

You will be fine with 1.2 in there but once you have babies, you will need other options. I like rubbermaids with screen put into the lid over glass tanks.

Re: keeping rats together.
I keep my baby rats in a ten gallon for right now...all they do is hide and when they do move around, it isn't far. They are still stressed out I think. I plan on moving them to the 20 long that my ball is in and moving him to a 40 breeder...then using the 10 gallon to keep extra rats (like problem child rats or nursing mothers.) Although, if you don't have any problems, you can keep all the rats together. Africa soft furs have many nipples (more than any other rodent) and they are known to lactate for other nursing mothers so they can help each other out. In fact, in many part of Africa, they are breeding too well and are a problem there. They number in plague proportions so the extra nipples are pretty handy for them. I don't think I will be moving them, they could use the help.
