Burmese python keeping inhumane?
My wife works at an animal hospital and asked them about keeping burmese pythons. They claimed that it is inhumane to keep them in anything less than a full size room, and that they will not treat them because of their beliefs in their treatment?

I guess they are against them being kept in vivariums or anything of the sorts. I think they believe they should have free roam of a room? Because of this they refuse to treat them.
Is it inhumane to keep them in enclosures??

Re: Burmese python keeping inhumane?
I have to disagree with their logic. As long as they have a decent size cage I have no problem with it. Now being in a relatively small cage is even better than having free roam of the house or even a room without proper temps. The only things I disagree with in burms is the breeding(Don't flame me for this). People continually breed giant snakes even when there are plenty in shelters already. Just My OPPINION

Too many boas to list and a few balls as well

Soooo, if I kept one in a XXXlg tank/enclosure... And you kept yours in a spare bedroom, and we both had a case of RI or Scale Rot... They would treat yours and not mine... correct?
As for housing one, I've never owned a burm, anny, or retic... So I'm of no help! Sorry. But hold tight, there are many great people that have them on here.. I'm sure you'll get a good reply!

Re: Burmese python keeping inhumane?
To answer the original post pretty definitively, it is inhumane to keep any animal, including burmese pythons, in conditions which their physiological and psychological needs are not met, whatever those needs may be.

Re: Burmese python keeping inhumane?
Wow.....It show's their experience in keeping any kind of Rock Python, or any kind of Rock Python husbandry.
It is very difficult to keep a Burm in a full sized room for several reasons. First off, you will encounter many husbandric problem's, including keeping humidity at stable amount's that this species of python need's, as well as holding stable temp's. Along with this fact, your room you keep the burm in will probably get ruined if you do this. Humidity is detrimental on drywall, and wood, and may cause some warping of the wall's, window's etc.. Burmese Python's are ambush predator's and aren't as active as something along the line's of a colubrid or other species of snake's. As such, they do not require the larger size cage's many people claim they need. All these larger size cage's really do is make it more difficult to keep the species, and causes some problem's for the individual snake being kept. An adult Burmese (Rock) Python can be kept comfortably and securely in an 8' x 3' x 2' cage. They feel more secure this way, and feed more readily...not that feeding is really a problem with Burm's lol. All I can say is with this show of knowledge and "belief" that this animal hospital has shown...simply find a new one.

Re: Burmese python keeping inhumane?
thats retarded. am 8'x3' area is plenty of room, for a male burm at least. i have a friend who has a 12' burm in a 6' x 30'' cage, and its more than enough room for the thing.

Re: Burmese python keeping inhumane?
I keep my Burms in corner enclosures that I built and the front is 12' wide and is 6' deep and 4' high. I believe they should have ample amount of room to roam but not so much that the conditions can't be controlled easily. I have no problems, well except the electric bill but thats just the price you pay to keep big burms in big enclosures.

do they think its inhumane to deliver puppies while thousands are killed every day? do they think its inhumane to put a muzzle on a dog? do they think its inhumane to declaw a cat?
