    Five Future Breeder Female Rats

Well gotta keep those three new males busy LOL. Three of these were already earmarked (or rather tailmarked) as future breeders but Christie's comments convinced me to have another quick look at Squeeker's litter so two of those female weanlings just got "promoted" LOL.

The two minks. Though unrelated they are almost identical....Liz and Liza (in their mink coats of course)....

A better pic of their true rich mink color....

Big Bertha....the best female of the last litter of my two top breeders...Casanova and HoneyChild...this female is very large for age...has the genetics of both great breeder parents so should prove to be a fantastic colony female for us....a full sister to Supernova....

Okay Christie since you said they are too cute to feed off...LOL...you get stuck naming these two daughters of Squeekers (full sisters to Lightning)....this pic shows the beige one's diamond head markings....

This one shows her sister's cute split cap face....

they are very cute. I am strongly considering breeding rats smalltime.

They're all so pretty!! Squeekers does indeed make some mighty cute babies! I can hardly wait until I finally get to start working with rats myself!

That last little girl is cute. Is she agouti? And I believe she is a wedge-blazed capped, not split capped. I'd be a little wary working with the high-whites, Jo(which that last little baby is as well as her brother). They can give you some issues.

I can't believe how big that Honeychild baby is! My lord. Gonna be a big girl, lookit those feet.

Ok, for some reason I like Daisy for the tan capped, and Mini for the other. I suck at names, so feel free to go with something else.

For those who are just getting started - what sort of issues?

Re: Five Future Breeder Female Rats

Yep she's an agouti capped like her momma, her sister is the beige capped. So that's a wedge not a split, thanks Becky, I'm still learning about the different coat markings.

Robin, from what I understand there can be genetic issues with megacolon in certain high white or patterned rats (like huskys, blazes, etc.). Here's a link I have on the subject.

    http://ratguide.com/health/digestive/megacolon.php

For this reason any females I use that are high white, have blazes or are husky marked are specifically bred to my darkest male. For example, these two sisters who are capped (especially the wedge blazed female) will be bred to Damian, a self black male, to cut down on the risk factors. So far I've not had any megacolon in the colony but should it occur those rats that produced the affected litter would not be bred to each other again as it's a pretty awful condition for any animal to live through.

I think it's fairly rare but since we do have rats in our colony that fall into the higher risk category, I make sure to breed to avoid any problems with this disorder.

Big Bertha is huge Becky LOL. Hard to see in the pic of her but she's a black hooded like her father. She and Supernova are from the last breedings of both HoneyChild and Casanova as both are now retired. HoneyChild has always produced exactly 15 pinks per litter. This last litter was only 6. HC's litters are always big rats even with 15 in a litter, but this last litter was amazing. Every one of the 6 are really big for age! I wonder if HC's was making enough milk for her usual 15 and these 6 little piggies got really big meals LOL.

YEAH!! What cuties. I love that mink color, very pretty. Although the little capped girls are adorable as well. I think they should be named after me since I saved em. Tiger and Lily. Ok, that's not the best idea, and I usually end up letting the kids name mine because I stink at naming. I'll try and come up with something later.
