    Question gas heater recommendations?

i just moved into a house and was hoping to keep the herps and the rats in the same room--the rats being set up in the closet area. this is NOT working, i think because the room is too small and doesn't have good enough ventillation.

anyhow, i would like to move the rats out to the garage but this will require some sort of heating for them. it doesn't get terribly cold here during the winter for very long, but it does get down into the 30s at night for about 2 months out of the year. anyhow, i would like to use a gas heater as this seems to be the safest and most economical way to heat the area. i'm looking for any recommendations from people that use this type of heater--which specific one do you use or which would you recommend?

Why not use one of the oil filled radiator style heaters? I am not sure what a gas heater is.

I am thinking they might be referring to a kerosene, natural gas or propane heater. They make them in all kinds of styles portable and garage style (wall mount) heaters. The only problem with them is they tend to give off carbon monoxide which can buid up and cause problems.

I agree with Jamie on the oil-filled radiator, it's lots cheaper too.

i did mean something like a kerosene heater, but see this is why i need help here. i will look into the oil-filled radiator instead. def. don't want something that is going to produce carbon monoxide in a closed garage.

what temps do you keep your rats at in the winter?

    Re: gas heater recommendations?

Here's a really nice one sold at most WalMarts for around $35.00 hon. It has a thermostat. I have one almost identical to this one pictured that we use for a bit of auxillary heat in the snake room and it works really well. If it's a big garage though you might want to put up some temporary cheap walls just so you aren't trying to heat a huge empty space (heck hang heavy blankets just to trap as much heat as possible in the area you have the rats in, careful of course that nothing is actually in contact with the heater of course).

thanks jo! it is a two car garage (barely). my husband had mentioned hanging some insulating blankets of some kind around the rat area which i think is going to be the best choice.

Well they are good hardy critters, a bit of heat, some nice deep bedding and each other to cuddle with and I'm sure they'll do fine out there hon.

    Re: gas heater recommendations?

How cold will it get in your garage normally?

I found the oil filled radiators dont work for me in my 24x24' garage, I had 4 going in there and it wouldnt heat it up in the winter.

If you close off an area with blankets and have a heater that will probably be enough though. Also rats are space heaters and heat up ambient a little. (in my case, 1000 ish rats keep the garage about 5-10 degrees warmer than normal, I think

    Re: gas heater recommendations?

the lowest it will probably get in the garage is about 40 degrees, possibly slightly colder on a few nights here and there.
