Humidity Issues

Hi Folks, I live in Las Vegas where we have NO natural humidity and I having on hell of a problem keeping my BP cage humid enough, I have tired just about Everything, I spray it Everyday and have a damp towel over the Screen (it is a 10 gal with a full wire screen top) I have been thinking of getting a fogger from the pet store but that seems like it is over doing it a bit. I tired Wet moss but my BP seemed to hate the stuff. (as soon as I added it she went to the opposite conner and would not leave) I am getting really worred about her she takes over a week to shed.

PS when should I start giving her small rats, instead of Pinkies she is about 1 3/4 years old and about 2 1/4 ft long.

We do have a lot of different solutions to humidity issues. Try using plastic wrap to cover the screen except for a couple small areas in the corners. Try using a larger water bowl. You can also place the water bowl more over the under the tank heater. Don't forget about humid hides as well. (you may want to try searching for other solutions in case I forgot about something)

As for meal size, pinkie rats are only fed to young bps. Depending on the girth I would attempt to feed a prey item that is slightly smaller than the widest girth of your snake. I can only guess that at a little over 2' that would be close to a rat pup. You're going to have to to make a judgement call on that one.

Do you use a heat lamp? A heat lamp will lower your humidity.

I would get a rubbermaid or sterlite tub. A good size for your ball python would probably be The Sterlite 1960

I second the suggestion of a plastic tub. I live in Tucson, so I totally understand the humidity issues that you speak of. Once I switched from glass to a plastic tub, humidity was no longer ever a problem...except occassionally getting too high! I never have to fuss with misting or anything.


It's not the prettiest enclosure, but if you're really worried about the well being of the snake, then it's probably the very best thing you can do.
