" Too hopper or not to hopper that is the question"

Ok, My sav. is about 10-11 inches and he has taken frozen hoppers before but I don't know how many he can take per feeding and how often I should offer? Everyday, every other day? I heard alot of different opinions on this subject. Also should I still offer crickets or is it best to get him on hoppers and leave it at that? Thanks, Trey

Savannahs really need to be on a mainly insect diet with a small rodent here and there. Feeding mainly rodents will cause them to get quite obese. At least the insects make them move and have to chase the insects around. Roaches are a good staple, as are grasshoppers, crickets, superworms, etc. You will have a much healthier, longer-lived Savannah if you feed an insect diet versus feeding a rodent diet.

It is ok to give them a small mouse every 2 weeks or so as a treat. Hoppers give them a run for their money

Ok thanks, The reason I asked is because someone on here said to get him on whole prey as soon as possible and I assumed they were talking about rodents. When do you know when crickets are too small for them?

When they won't hunt them anymore. My sav is 2' and he still loves chasing crickets and roaches. I would invest in a large colony of non climbing roaches. Roaches are easy to keep, smell free, and come in all different sizes!

I hate climbing roaches which is why I avoided the cheap and easy to find lobsters. They climb out of cages which is why I said no. Can't feed leos when their bugs are climbing on the lid of the tubs

for all your cages as well??? I'll stick with my latteralis for now. Breed fast and are about the size of a cricket. Monitor gets a kick out of them too. They are faster than lobster roaches I think. Never put them together for a race but I think the latteralis would make the lobster eat his exeskeloton!!!

Re: " Too hopper or not to hopper that is the question"

I've never found any real clear answers to insects vs whole prey - all caresheets seem to advocate a different thing. So he doesn't get overweight I'm currently feeding mine (he's a year) on 100 -150 locusts per week and feeding him 3 small mice 2-3 times a week. He loves chasing the locusts around (I think he's attracted to their bright yellow color). So far we have no sagging belly syndrome - but I'm relatively new to savs so don't have a wealth of experience to back me up.
