    Making an asp of myself.

Okay, my google fu is failing me here, is an asp an Egyptian cobra, a European viper, or a generic term for venomous snakes or what? Is there a snake species that is techically actually called an asp? Or is it a sort of archaic term that isn't specific? I am most confused. I'm thinking it's a sort of shorthand of naja haje but my search results have been all over the map.

    From Wikipedia:

Asp is the modern/anglicized form of aspis. In antiquity the name refers to a venomous snake of Egypt from the Nile delta region and generally assumed to refer to the Egyptian cobra.

Now, why didn't I think of checking wiki?

And that's the snake that was throwing me, Jessie! They're called the European Asp, or Asp Viper so I grew further bewildered, lol. Lovely snakes!

EDIT: Er, wait, that was Vipera Aspis... blarg, I can't brain I have the dumb today.

Naja haje - egyptian banded cobra, also known as Cleopatra's Asp. It's said to be the species she killed herself with.

There was one at the reptile zoo I used to work at. Beautiful animal. She hooded at me once. Very cool.
