    Memorial Day Herpin' (DU Warning)

My son and I went herping for a little while today. We found a couple of critters.

We found a rat snake that slightly irritated when one of our dogs stepped right on it.

Atleast, I think it is a grey ratsnake. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

My son says this lizard is a 7 line racer. I think it is a skink. Let me know which it is. BTW we live in West Tennessee if that helps any.

Here's some pics my wife took while we were 4-wheeler riding the other day.
We saw 3 deer in a field, here is a buck that is in velvet.

And a squirrel that was trying to get a quick getaway.

    Great photos!

That lizard looks like a six-lined racerunner(Cnemidophorus sexlineatus sexlineatus) to me. They are the only racerunner in Tenn.

They are extreamely quick. Six-lined are distinguishable from skinks and similar looking lizards by the larger scales in the belly area. Here are some pics of one that I caught a while back.

Re: Memorial Day Herpin' (DU Warning)

The ratsnake was about 3 feet long and 1 1/4 inches in diameter. I'm estimating the length it may have been longer. There's no way I was going to touch it after my pug stepped on it and upset it. I found it under some old tin about 300 feet behind my house in the same pile of tin I found a copperhead not to long ago.

My wife snapped the pic of the squirrel when we drove into a field on our 4-wheeler.
