    Rainbow in shed

There isn't a much prettier color than a Brazilian Rainbow Boa in shed. I love it! Here are a couple of Sasha:

Cool pic. I was thinking of getting one. But kinda iffy on the temperment. How are they when they get out of the nippy stage and are they that much more difficult to care for than say a Ball or Carpet Python.

I was thinkin of gettin one too......I know they need it really humid, but other than that, i don't know much about them. How is Sasha to care for and how is her temperament? They are just so beautiful, and Sasha is no exception! you should post pics of her after shed as well....wow!!

Poor thing looks mildly miserable! I can't imagine that that is a very comfortable experience. Please post post-shed pics as well!

    Re: Rainbow in shed

Sasha's temperament is awesome, which is amazing considering his neglect in his last home. I didnt have him as a baby so I cant speak to that but lots of babies are nippy and with the right amount of handling and an ideal environment, most outgrow it. As far as care, its not particularly difficult but definitely not a beginner snake. First off, they don't tolerate the high temps that BPs do. Sasha's warm side is kept between 83 and 87 (anything higher than 90 can be fatal). The cool side goes down into the 70s. As far as humidity, I had always been under the impression that they need over 90% humidity. After doing some more research, they seem to do fine at 70%-80%. I use newspaper on half the cage (and one the warm side) and moss on the cool side (where he spends most of his time). I have used cypress and bed a beast in the past. Cypress is great for high humidity but I hate the smell. Bed a beast is a poor choice for them as it can easily clog their heat pits (or so I have been told). In the end, newspaper was the easiest for me. I would say if you intend on getting a BRB, find a reputable breeder. Check out Jeff Favelle (www.jefffavelle.com). He is in Canada (and a great guy) but apparently the CITES process has gotten a bit easier and according to him there is no charge for the permits. I am not sure about US breeders. Good luck and I hope I have answered some or most of the questions!

Awww poor Sasha but please take some pics of him fresh shed. He's a stunningly gorgeous snake and I would think even more so right after shed. Lovely work you've done with him Jamie bringing him back from such a horrible past.

I sure will. Tonight was a big test. He ate 2 rats rather than the normal 1. He hasnt gained any weight in months and is still on the thin side. On some advice from Jeff Favelle I am upping him to 2 rats per week to try to put some weight on him. He felt that 1 small rat would do nothing more than maintain his weight. Keep your fingers crossed. Everytime I upped prey size or frequency in the past, he vomited. Of course he has come a long way since then and he hasnt done that in nearly a year and all tests on him have been negative. He has been treated repeatedly and will remain quarantined for life.

All the crossable bits have been crossed and I'm sending the "keep your rats down like a good snake" vibes his way Jamie. Please let us know if all went well with the feeding as well as the lovely pics (though who cares about lovely pics...just keep your dinner down Sasha!)
