    Question Genetics Confrimation

Hey folks. Really quick question just to confirm my suspicion. By the way I have studied the punnett square 101,102, etc.

If I breed a Super Pastel with a 100% het for albino I suspect the results are as follows: (assumtion here is 4 eggs)

2 Albino Super Pastels (looks really sweet)
2 Pastel's (are they het for albino also?)

I'm not sure if according to the example that the Pastel's are also het for albino as well. Is this correct or am I way off here?

I am pretty sure that you would get all pastels 50% het albino right?

    Re: Genetics Confrimation

Yes.. all pastels.. half of which carry ONE copy of the albino gene. Hence - they do not LOOK albino unless they have two copies since albino is a recessive trait.

EDIT - If the pastel is also het for albino, then each egg has a 25% chance of being albino.

    Thumbs up Re: Genetics Confrimation

    I understand now... It's clear.

Unless I have a Albino in the equation all will be Pastels with 50% het for albino because of the dominant Super Pastel gene. OK. So if want a (for example) the Albino Pastel then I would just use a (homozygous) Albino with a Super Pastel.
Het alone won't do the trick because I'll be missing the other gene.

Once again, thanks for the valuable responses. This means its back to the drawing board for me. I'm planning for 2007 and 2008.

    Re: Genetics Confrimation

A super pastel with an albino will still not produce albino, because only one parent carries the gene. BOTH parents must carry at least one copy of albino to produce albino babies.

You can either breed two het albinos (or super pastel het albino with a het albino, makes no difference) to get 25% albino.

Or you can breed a super pastel het albino with an albino to get pastel 50% albino.

an albino super pastel bred to an albino will produce 100% pastel albinos.

    Re: Genetics Confrimation

Super Pastel to Albino = All Pastel 100% Het Albino
Super Pastel to Het Albino = All Pastel 50% Poss Het Albino
Super Pastel Het Albino to Het Albino = All Pastels with 25% Pastel Albino, 25% Pastel Het Albino, & 50% Pastels
Super Pastel Albino to Albino = All Pastel Albinos

Hope this is a simple explanation.... (And correct... ) <crossing fingers>

Actually results would be 25% pastel albino, 50% pastel het albino, and 25% pastel.
