I wanna say it's because they're active during the brightest part of the day in the wild, and he's comfortable enough in his enclosure that he knows it's safe to bask, even while in that vulnerable state. He knows where his hides are and he even went back in one when lights went off. (sorry for the double reply, I just thought of this. Lol)
