Two local ALERTS! Denison, IA & Richmond, VA

    ALERT: Denison, Iowa
This ordinance affects domesticated and non-traditional pet owners! Denison, Iowa has proposed a very broad ban on all species not native to Iowa or Nebraska. Additionally, there is a pet limit for domesticated species and even fish. The draft language is very poorly and haphazardly written. This is a bad one! All local pet owners need to get involved and amend this shortsighted ordinance. Get involved or get banned! Locals need to call and email the Mayor and Council members ASAP!

Read the full alert with contact info, sample messaging, and more at https://usark.org/23denison/.

    ALERT: Richmond, Virginia
Richmond, Virginia has proposed a local ban on “exotic or wild animals” (species list below) with a meeting scheduled for May 8.
Note that there is no grandfathering mentioned! This means that even currently owned animals will be illegal to keep. Also, there is not even any grace period for people to rehome their animals. The ordinance is effective immediately upon passage.

It really is scary how frequently these "No animals allowed PERIOD!" law proposals have been cropping up lately, especially in a time where food prices are breaching record highs and people getting self-sufficient with keeping their own livestock has only been gaining more importance.

I was thinking that too- some places are getting so "anti-animal"- I really don't know where this is coming from but it seems to be "contagious", & it's awful.

    Unfortunately, this is political.

Big government is encroaching into our lives. It doesn't have an affiliation either. It is overreach no matter how you slice it.

I get concerned when "banning" things becomes a regular practice.

This hits home with us here because it has to do with animals. A subject that is our passion. That said, we all need to care about the same thing happening with things that maybe we don't hold dear to our hearts but others do.

A lot of people don't care about reptiles or certain pets. My point is, those people should care, and we should care about things that maybe we don't cherish being taken or limited.

Freedoms being taken away in bits and pieces behind the scenes will eventually hurt us all.

I couldn't agree more. We all need to be paying attention, and we also need to get involved wherever we can. It's not the time to be complacent, or it will soon be too late.
