    NARBC Arlington and ALERTS

    NARBC Arlington
A big reptile show and a big football game... it's a busy weekend! This show just keeps growing and this will be a great show (as always). There will tons to see and if it is herp-related, it will be at this show. All regional herp keepers should be headed to the Dallas area this weekend. Vendors come from across the U.S. and this show draws attendees from many states.
Do not forget about the USARK benefit auction Saturday night following the show. Included in this auction, along with LOTS of other items, is another custom donation from Lone Star Reptiles. We will just say that it has some Texas attitude. Thank you, Lone Star Reptiles, and all other donors!
The auction has both live and silent portions so there are opportunities for everyone. Show attendees can come and hang out with the vendors while enjoying the always amusing antics performed by Brian Potter.
USARK appreciates the continued support from Bob, Brian, and the NARBC crew.
    Show Schedule:
    Saturday, Feb. 11: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Benefit Auction (Sheraton hotel): Auction preview (room opens) at 5:30. The auction will start at 6:00.
The auction is FREE and open to everyone.
    Sunday, Feb. 12: 11:00 am – 4:00 pm
    Show location:
    Arlington Convention Center
    1200 Ballpark Way
    Arlington, TX 76011
(The auction will be at the Sheraton hotel next door to the show.)
    More information athttps://www.narbc.com/.

From NARBC: "The auction is our way of supporting USARK. It's a great time for getting together after the show Saturday night with friends from all over the world. If you don't know who USARK is, you need to find out. The night includes an auction with 100% of the proceeds going to USARK. We ask that everyone attending give something for the auction. Your help will be returned to you as USARK fights for our rights to own and sell herps."
ALERT: New Mexico Animal Program Ban
UPDATE 2/8: After a long debate and discussion, this bill was tabled a second time. It could return this session but hopefully, that is all for this year. Please keep sending your opposition letters! Thank you to everyone who voiced opposition. Your voices made a difference!
New Mexico Senate Bill 134 (SB134) is another “traveling animal act” ban with broad-sweeping implications. SB134 prohibits using any animal except “domesticated dogs, domesticated cats or livestock” in educational outreach and other programs. This is a ban on any "transport and display" of all non-domesticated animals, so that means school programs, fairs, Scout Troops, herp club meetings, and even reptile shows.

    ALERT: Washington Animal Program Ban
SB5148 and HB1157 ban programs with thousands of species including ALL “snakes and reptiles,” ferrets, sugar gliders, and more. Unsuspecting Washingtonians do not know the ramifications of this misleading bill.

    ALERT: Connecticut Animal Program Ban
The Connecticut Animal Advocacy Caucus has introduced a traveling exotic animal performance ban (HB5123) again for the 2023 session with some slight differences from previous versions. The bill’s Statement of Purpose: “To prohibit the use of certain animals in traveling animal acts.” This will prohibit using certain animals (listed in our alert) in outreach programs with the assumption that inherent cruelty and abuse are present. There are no exceptions.

    ALERT: Loudoun County, Virginia Ban
Loudoun County is proposing a ban on “wild or exotic animals” (see species list in full alert) deemed as a public safety risk by the County. This is in reaction to an irresponsible owner whose illegally owned alligator escaped.

This issue has a public hearing on February 15 at 6:00 PM at 1 Harrison St. SE, Leesburg, VA. Get the meeting details at https://www.loudoun.gov/Calendar.aspx?EID=13226&month=1&year=2023&day=17&calType=0.

    Re: NARBC Arlington and ALERTS

    Synopsis of Senate Bill 134

Senate Bill 134 (SB134) amends the Municipal Code (Chapter 3 NMSA 1978) to prohibit the use of exotic animals in traveling performances with the exception of
rodeos, animal rehabilitation programs, animal shelter programs, and accredited animal education or conservation programs.

The exception for rodeos just kills me. I've never been to a rodeo, but from what I've seen on T.V., I can't imagine they're exemplars of humane animal treatment.

    Re: NARBC Arlington and ALERTS

I realize I'm kinda beating a dead horse here. The update says that the bill has been tabled, but these types of bills keep coming up so educating yourself about them is still worthwhile. I found the Fiscal Impact Report on this bill particularly illuminating. It notes objections from the New Mexico Attorney General's Office, the Department of Game and Fish, the Gaming Control Board and one zoo director. I suspect many of these objections could also be raised against similar legislation in other states. The report is linked below. It surprisingly easy to read and it's only four pages.
