Happy medium between a tub and a PVC enclosure?

Is there a happy medium between a tub and a PVC enclosure? I'd like to set up my son (12 years old) with a decent enclosure for his first ball python. I'd really like to go PVC for humidity and temperature control but I'd want to keep expenses down if I can. I'm tempted to go with a tub and upgrade later but I know he is going to want to decorate the enclosure and observe the snake (when not in a hide) so this probably isn't a great choice. I feel like my only other option is an Exo Terra or a more traditional aquarium/terrarium setup. Is there a category or enclosure type I'm missing?

Specialty Enclosure Designs makes a kit to convert a tub into a sliding door front opening enclosure.

If it's opaque tubs you want to avoid, mine are both in clear storage bins. They're not perfectly clear plastic but the humidity keeps really well and you can use a UTH with them which makes things easy.

That does seem to fit the bill. I found a video where someone put one of these together. Looks like you need to be pretty handy, though, and have access to tools.
