    Yellowbelly complex genetics unlocked!

So an awesome set of researchers figured out the Yellowbelly complex and can reliably test for it using a shed skin.

What seems to be even more interesting for me is that there's actually two sets of genes responsible for yellowbelly and ivory. An Ivory can happen with one of each or a double of one with the same result.

It's pretty cool to get confirmation after all these years that it is indeed different morphs in a complex, when some stragglers were still insisting it's just line-bred unrelated genes. It will be interesting to see their findings on other complexes as time goes on.

Pretty neat that there are two different YB that cannot be distinguished visually too!

I wonder if the reason sometimes it's more difficult to ID YB is one of those two genes is a bit lower expression. At least I feel like that could explain why sometimes people are surprised when an ivory or freeway pops up in something they didn't think had YB.

    Interesting!
I had to reread the article a few times to figure out answers to my immediate questions.

Now that we can genetically identify Asphalt/Gravel vs. YB we need someone to figure out a reliable visual method.

Yes! Great points. I think that’s what may have happened when I paired two enchi’s together and didn’t recognize yb in the female at all and she produced two ivory’s. I did back up the pairing with a orange dream yb male months after the initial pairing and locking of the enchi male. Wow. I was hoping to get super enchis but got the ivorys instead.

This is the other Ivory female from that enchi/ orange dream yb X enchi yb pairing.

At last! Proof that many of the genes in the black-eyed leucistic complex are codominants rather than incomplete dominants. Smash goes the claim that there are no codominant genes in ball pythons.
