    Mainland-Dwarf Cross Mixtures

    this may sound awfully dumb but maths have never been my strong suit lol but basically, my question is: if I have a cross dwarf retic male (75M/25D), and I cross bred that with a pure dwarf locality female (100D) - what would the resulting clutch of snakelets be? and with the male, when breeding, would that 25% dwarf DNA be a constant contribution to its overall 50% contribution? how exactly does that work? is it possible that a partial dwarf cross of 25% could end up only contributing mainland DNA?

    62.5% dwarf, but since the female is the pure, they will be a lot smaller than a lot of 62.5% on the market. I'd make sure and mention when selling OS that the female is the pure dwarf so that people who understand that matters know what to expect.

    thanks a bunch for these replies as they have been most helpful - i would note this is a hypothetical for future reference as i am still in the process of building and acquiring all that i need for the future breeding ventures - was primarily wondering about the ultimate breeding potential for my new snake, which is a 75M/25D male burm

    so there could be size differences depending on the sex of the cross parent? like a snakelet from the above pairing (100D female to 75M/25D male) would be smaller than a snakelet from a pairing of 75M/25D female burm to 100D male?

    also, so am I correct in understanding that the 25% dwarf DNA present in my male would always be fully passed on? there would never be a possibility that he could contribute exclusively mainland DNA? because that was a future concern of mine if I said “I have a dwarf cross clutch for sale” and then they end up being regular mainland size becuz of this or something

    Sorry I missed this before. The female's size has a more dramatic impact on the size of the offspring. I'm not sure if it is because mtDNA is what is mainly responsible for size or what. Garrett Hartle (Reach Out Reptiles) has done some videos where he shows 63/37 crosses that compare when the mom is SD vs the male is SD at the same ages and it's astounding. As far as exactly how it works, I'm not certain, if it is 100% mtDNA based, then it shouldn't matter at all how much the father has, but since we know 1.0 mainland x 0.1 SD produces something close to SD but a little bigger, it's likely to be a combination of mtDNA and normal DNA.

    Correct.

    25% D x 25% D = 25% D, and any combo where the male and female share the same percent, the OS will also be that same percent, so 50% D x 50% D = 50% D, 75% D x 75% D = 75% D and so on.

    25% D x 25% D = 25% D, and any combo where the male and female share the same percent, the OS will also be that same percent, so 50% D x 50% D = 50% D, 75% D x 75% D = 75% D and so on.

    many thanks for this detailed answer! i suspected this but was hoping i was wrong - i would say however, specific to burms, i am going to be starting a size comparison thread between my dwarf female (75M/25D) and the mainland female i hope to get soon - my theory is that dwarf DNA is more significant in Burms than Retics but it will be interesting to see the results

    It would be really cool to see more comparisons. There just isn't many since very few people keep giants, let alone multiple giants.
