    Inexperienced pairing

So this question is for all my breeders out there (I’m looking at you nikkubus ). I have a first time breeding pair and they both seem uninterested in each other and it seems like it’s more her than it is him. I paired them Tuesday night and the next morning when I checked on all my pairs before work I didn’t see any signs of her scenting the tub or anything like that, they were actually on opposite sides of the tub from each other. When I got home from work it seemed like they were closer together, I didn’t pull out the tub or anything it was just from what I could see through the tub, and then when I got home from work today they were again on opposite sides of the tub from each other so I pulled him out and back into his own tub. My male has been in with another female last week and she scented the tub like crazy and he seemed very interested (she is also a first time breeder) but he went into shed the day after I paired them so I pulled him. I asked a good friend of mine and he said to put an experienced male in with her to kind of kick start her into breeding. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to get this pair to lock up? This is my favorite pairing I’m doing this year and I would be devastated if I didn’t get eggs and or babies from them. Thanks in advance for the replies!

Have you been palpating her? She may just not quite be ready yet. Rather than introduce a new male to her, you might try putting another male's shed if you have one. If you still have some decent time before her follicles are to the point of no return, I'd probably just try again in a couple weeks. I'm not doing pairing this time of year yet, so I don't know what kind of seasonal cycle you have them on if any.

I haven’t palpated her, I’m really not that great at it. I won’t notice any follicles unless they’re literal marble sized lol I have them on a cooling cycle that starts October 1st so it’s been about 5-6 weeks. This was her first pairing, I’m not in any rush but I’ll try to palpate her sometime in the next week or 2. Is there such thing as an experience thing with them? Like an experienced male with a virgin female and vice versa?

You have plenty of time then probably. Just be patient, and try the shed thing to see if it sparks a hormonal instinct to seek a male. There is an experience factor, but I'd say it's more on the male end. A virgin male might need quite a few pairings before he really figures out what he is doing. Female shed sometimes helps get the males going as well. If you can manage to place him with that female when she has freshly shed, that should really get him worked up. Generally most my girls have a shed some time after the cooling cycle is started, before they get serious about letting males breed them.

Okay I’ll pair him with one of my other experienced girls next week that I was planning to pair him with anyways and wait for one of my other males to shed. Thanks!
