    Seaquest - Trumbull, CT

Today Katie and I visited Seaquest, in Trumbull, CT. They have them all over the USA (https://visitseaquest.com), but we live in CT and this was about an hour drive.

Very cool experience. It's actually in the shopping mall in Trumbull, and our expectations were low, but we had a great time and were impressed with the staff and the care the animals appear to receive.

They had everything from red tailed catfish and pacus to sharks and sting rays in terms of water living animals. They had corn snakes, a burmese pythons, a Boa (BI), Uromastyx, a blue tongue skink, etc. They also had otters, a toucan (who I got to feed by hand!), and the reason we went, to meet their two sloths and one of their Kinkajou's (also known as a honey bear - in the raccoon family but with a prehensile tail).

Katie loves, loves, loves, sloths. Last year we met one from the bronx zoo via zoom. Today, she got to feed Flash (male about 2 1/2 years old) and his potential beau Phoebe. They were both pretty social, but Flash was both incredibly social and hungry! After the sloths, we got sit with a young honey bear and feed her. She was very sweet, but apparently, they go through a long adolescents and can be difficult. They are legal to sell as pets, and look and act similar to monkeys (and are often legal where monkey's are not as pets), but people often get in over their head with them. They need a lot of attention and can do damage during their outbursts during ages 2-5 or so. They also cannot be house trained, etc.

It appears many of the animals were adopted or taken in because people couldn't care for them. I am not sure if that is true at all locations, but the staff repeatedly emphasized how many people get in over their heads and although clearly for profit, Seaquest tries to raise awareness. Again, the animals we interacted with seemed well socialized and well cared for. Does being there and meeting people during the day stress them out? I don't know. All I can say is that given that this is a business, and in a mall, etc. we were impressed with the health of the animals, knowledge of the staff, and cleanliness of the whole aquarium/zoo.

    Here's Katie with Flash!

Well that looks like it was a awful lot of fun! They've got some really cool creatures, & I like the faces on the rays too, btw- I never realized how much personality they could put forth. The more people can connect with exotic animals & learn about them, the better chance there is that they'll care enough to conserve them, so I give it a thumb's up, as long as their animals are well-cared for. I feel the same way about zoos, except there the best ones are often actively involved in not just conservation but in reintroduction to the wild for some species. I'm glad they make a point of educating people about why some of these exotics make terrible "pets" & now are kept by them instead- people get way in over their heads.

That sounds really cool. With the oversupply in commercial retail space and dying mega-malls, I wonder if they will consider expanding.
