Red tailed rat snake - Gonyosoma oxycephalum. Anyone have or , want these?

They are a beautiful snake. I had a pair years ago. I am currently looking for a new pair. but hard to find.

Mine had sharp teeth and were a bit snappy, but captive selection over the years has hopefully helped that.

They spread their neck like a cobra but vertically. And that blue tongue

Does any one have these? what do you think?

Not my pictures by the way, Google pictures.

A 'late' friend of mine used to keep them, they were his favorite snakes. He enjoyed their attitudes, & one of his would actually stop just short of sinking it's teeth into his hand- he got quite a kick out of that. Of course, there's no telling if the snake suddenly realized this was his buddy, or if he just didn't taste all that good, lol, but my friend took it to be a indication of acceptance. I hope you can find some captive-bred ones, as otherwise they're going to be heavily-parasitized & difficult to manage (health-wise), & they enjoy large arboreal type enclosures.

If you can't find these, you might also enjoy Taiwan beauty rat snakes (they get bigger but captive-bred are readily available- I used to keep these) or "Blue beauty" Vietnamese rat snakes. Both of these have similar care needs & personalities, more like a racer when you handle them- & don't expect them to sit still.

I got my originals wild caught back in the day when mostly that was all that you could get for most snakes, Yes heavily parasitized, but I had good medical contacts and sorted that out.
They fed like demons and eventually breed.
This time round I want captive breed as a few are available now.
Don't know where you live. I do know of one source of captive breed in the uk. Only A few available per year though. None right now.

Thanks. I'm in the U.S. They do become available every so often, but someone always gets to it before me. Usually a wait-list. But, the silver phase tends to show up more often. Also beautiful, but I really prefer the green... one of the main reason I want one, is because their greens are so beautiful.

Agree with you, though. I will only take cb. I don't want to have anything to do with wild-caught.

Been trying to get my hands on a mangrove as well, specifically the subspecies B. melanota. Them too... hard to find. I just love the beautiful yellow/black contrast.

Can't agree more I love bright green snakes (and those with some blue) Not many as vivid as this without going hot though.
I see you have russian rat snakes, they can be a nice green too. I had them back in the day. Lovely animals.

Actually, don't have a Russian Rat Snake. That's on my list of wants... for both their colors and curious personalities.

My current collection includes a bel ball python, a Mexican Black kingsnake, and more recently a baby sunglow boa.

    My wants are:
    Red-tailed green rat snake
    King rat snake
    Woma python
    Mangrove snake
    Russian Rat snake

The king rat and the woma I'm on a list, and should hopefully have them before the end of the year, if not with a couple months.

    My girls in the pics...

I love BELS. This is mine, Super lesser,
Strange.. but under UV light it has a stripe down its back

I read your list properly. I think i will make a have and want list like you too.

I'm not up on the genetics, but this was the pairing for her... Mojave Russo x Pastel Lesser.

Very happy with her. I see a pattern as well under the black light. Cool stuff.
