Sanity Check, New Snake Parent

So, after months of research and planning my new snake arrived today. I have had a tub enclosure set up for him for two weeks now, making sure I could maintain the right parameters. It is just long enough for him to fully stretch out on one side. Warm side of 88, cool is 75 (digital temp/humidity gauges at each end), 2 appropriately sized hides on opposite ends, water dish big enough for him to soak in, rough rock to rub on and fake plants to make him feel secure.

Humidity is normally around 65% but his breeder mentioned that he was in shed so I added a small, lidless container of lightly damp coconut coir to the corner of his container. I got the humidity up to 78%. A little high, but the only damp spot in the enclosure is the coconut coir container. He has been in the enclosure for a few hours now, mostly exploring, (I have been glancing in the room to check, but not getting too close or opening the enclosure, I want to let him chill.) It seems he has finally picked a spot to take a nap... inside the coconut coir container... I thought he would want to be inside his hide, not out in the open? Does he not have enough humidity? Am I doing something wrong? Or am I just that new parent that panics when their baby decides he wants to sleep in the dirt?

Sounds like new parent panic to me. From your post it seems like you did your research and are doing everything exactly how we typically recommend it be done. Just keep an eye on things, hands off until he eats for you consecutively three times, and enjoy your new BP

They can take a week or two to really settle down - some will explore on and off for days .

Maybe the coconut hide thingy feels more secure than the other options.. are they bigger ??

Quick update, thank you guys for putting me at ease. My still unnamed boy is settling in beautifully, using his hides now and he had his first meal tonight. Took a frozen/thawed like he's been eating them his whole life! I was worried at first because he wasn't reacting, but once he finally saw it he locked on.

I'm not a bad snake mom! (at least not this week)

Just do EXACTLY the same next time ... although if there’s any hesitation it’s always worth trying to heat the mouse / rat up first then offer immediately

It was warmed up. Thawed it in the fridge for several hours, then soaked in warm water for a few minutes until it temp gunned at 100 degrees. "Fat kid on a cupcake" would be an accurate description of his enthusiasm level, once he realized it was there.

Just to be clear, you don't even have to be "fat" to be all over a good cupcake! Ask me how I know...

Having my fair share of "fluff" I know the value of a good cupcake. I also know I'm super lucky to have gotten a good eater (knock on wood),and can't wait until he is finally all settled and I can start working with handling him. 2 more feeds!
