Looking at taking in another rehome/ non eating Hognose/ Thoughts?

Ok, there is some one rehoming a Hognose snake near me....

Always wanted a Hognose, taking in unwanted snakes is my thing...

But from the ad: (not posting a link been warned about that)

It's supposed to be a 1 year old Het Albino Female

    Quote right from the ad:

"This is NOT a good snake for a beginner. She has been a horrible eater almost since day 1, and is underweight. I have tried every trick possible to get her to eat, and none have worked. I have other snakes, and none have given me this much trouble. I'm hoping maybe a new owner will have some luck, as maybe my household is just too much for her"

My question is any chance I am able to turn this poor snake into a decent eater? and get her back on track??

Or am I just headed for something that's not going to go good?

Says she come with a 10 gal tank with lid, lots of "laboratory grade aspen" and mini reptilinks

So is that the right enclosure, bedding and food or is the problem of not eating part of that??

I do have 4 BP's right now so I'm used to picky eaters , and have no problem working with that and doing what it takes

Thanks in advance for any input on this!

I can recall hearing about a prevalent health issue in hognose snakes- just don't recall what it was off-hand. Who knows what you might be bringing home, pathogen-wise? This is a Western hoggy, I assume? or could it be an Eastern? Big difference. Hard to advise you, how badly do you want to be frustrated? LOL (Do you have a place to quarantine for safety???)

What does the snake weigh and when the last time it's eaten? They are pretty tiny when small so non feeding at a year old is concerning. Especially if they've "tried everything" and it's always been a poor feeder. You would need to be able to QT this snake away from any of yours, vet if it need be, it may get quite expensive, only to lose it anyways, these are all things to be prepared for and think about.

How long have they had this snake, by the way? (How long has it been "since day 1"?)

Are there kids in the household? When they admitted that maybe their household is just too much for this snake, that is sort of a hint, IMO. Overhandling by clueless kids is a huge reason why many snakes stop eating, as is too many dogs & cats running around. Stress is way more fixable than some unknown disease, so maybe ask more questions while you're deciding.

And plenty of snakes won't eat Repti-links. What else did they try?

Whatever you decide, none of us has a 'crystal ball' & the decision is yours alone to live with. I won't blame you whatever you decide. (I likes it up here on this fence...hahaha!)

If you want a Hognose, if you have the space to quarantine properly, and if you can accept the consequences - including possible veterinary expenses and/or poor outcome if it turns out that she is ill (which I frankly doubt), I'd take her.

I don't think there's any real need to ask a lot of questions about the household or what's been tried. I'm just speaking from previous rescue experience when I say that if you take this snake, start from scratch, assume a blank slate in terms of what you plan to try, quarantine at least 90 days, and treat it as though it's been terrified and abused.

The only caveat is that once you see the snake personally, think again if it appears to be extremely debilitated, shows neurological symptoms, etc. But the typical 'it won't eat' has just been stressed like crazy and husbandry has been screwed up, so care and patience will often resolve things.

Well looks like the Hog Nose is gone, I cannot find the posting...

Thanks for all the input, My big worry was getting a snake like that eating..

The quarantine is not a problem in the summer when the house temps stabilize, I cannot do it in the winter when I heat a single room for the snake room

I know they eat some weird things, I did find this from Deborah (Stewart Reptiles) Just to add info to this post from this post.....

Take him in. Post your enclosure, post a picture of the snake. If you need help I am here. I have two copperheads that would not eat for a year. Guess what I had to do? Yes you guessed it I force feed them. I have the venom defender gloves and I use tubes to force feed so don't trip people. Force/assist feeding isn't too bad once you get the hang of it. If you love snakes and you want to take care of them get the hog nose
