99% Humidity. Eggs dimpleing.

Day 11


DIY fridge convert incubator

Perlite/water with light diffuser in egg box lifting the eggs off the substrate.

Bottom drawer converted into a water chamber to keep overall humidity high. According to digital and analog hygrometers this is between 90-95%.

I've got two Xiaomi Smart thermometer /hygrometer in the egg tub. One outside in the incubator.

The egg box digital devices record the history, and temps seem to fluctuate between 88.8f and 89.4. However for the most part it's 89.4. Humidity hasn't moved off 99%.


Ive uploaded pics. Would really appreciate if you could take a look and advice on how they look or if I need to take action.

I’m not seeing any major dimpling that would be considered problematic, so I think you’re fine!

Thanks that's good to hear.

There is certainly some dimpling though right or am imagining it. What causes that?

Other than that do they look healthy?

The dimples I do see are minor and are normal with most eggs — major dimpling will look more like dents in the eggs, like someone put a needle in there and sucked out some of the fluid.

I’ve hatched out a few clutches myself last year, and yours look perfectly fine. They may start denting/dimpling more as they get closer to hatching (mine did) but right now I don’t see anything that looks problematic.

Hopefully some others can give their input as well — I know how it feels being unsure of yourself, I was a mess last year trying to figure everything out since it was also my first year breeding haha

Last year I had two hatch out of eight. And they both died so I really tried to step up my game this year.

But if this clutch fails I think that will be the end for me and breeding. So that's the importance

Ye I know they dimple when closer but its day 12 today actually. So worried about the dimpling.

I understand — I had 4 clutches last year. The first one was 8 healthy eggs, and only 1 baby ended up surviving and he’s... very odd. Has a few deformities (skull is oddly shaped, small kink by his vent) but he’s thriving now.
The other babies had worse issues, most dying before they left the egg.

Luckily my other three clutches did well, besides a couple babies suddenly dying after hatching out and after taking their first meals. I suspect just a failure to thrive for those ones.

This year so far, out of 5 females, only 1 seems to be developing follicles. I feel 5 follicles in her, and they’re about half dollar sized so I’m sure she’ll ovulate soon.
There’s a couple that aren’t developing at all, and a couple I’m not sure about yet. Just gotta
give them more time I suppose.

I also bred my hognose girl, last year she laid 7 good eggs, 1 went bad, second clutch was all slugs — this year she slugged out both clutches. Sometimes breeding isn’t always successful and great, a lot of breeders don’t talk about the downsides to it and the fact that there’s always a chance of there being issues no matter what you do.

I think you’re doing great, and I’m crossing my fingers for you that this clutch hatches out some healthy babies!

For day 11-12 those eggs look like they are in trouble to me.

If you can catch an issue early enough you can correct it.

What are you using for a heat source, thermostat, and where is your probe located for the thermostat?
