Due to the heavy alert volume this year, we have created an ALERT page on our website at https://usark.org/alerts/. Here you can easily find all current alerts and updates. We are only including updates and new alerts in this newsletter. Previously announced alerts can be found at https://usark.org/alerts/. ALERT UPDATE: Lacey Act Amendment
We updated our alert with the bill text and a summary for S626. This is more than a bill that would reverse the USARK federal lawsuit victory by reinstating the ban on interstate transportation of species listed as injurious under the Lacey Act. The bill has sweeping ramifications not only for herpetoculture, but many other animal interests potentially affecting nearly all species (both non-native and native) of animals not considered domesticated. We will present a detailed Action Alert soon and when appropriate. Please read our update at the link below.

    ALERT UPDATE: Eureka, California
Thank you to everyone involved! Eureka officials have listened to the herpetocultural community's many concerns regarding the last draft of the City's animal ordinance. Changes were still being made on the day of the hearing. A new draft ordinance will be released and our issues have been addressed. The new draft will reflect a common-sense approach to the ordinance revision. We will post updates when available.

Internet is down so on phone.

    In brief. Poop.

I guess due process is overrated.

All reptile owners should NOT LIKE THIS. Donate to USARK now.

Also and not trying to get political - Dems and GOP involved here - but don’t senators have better things to be working on than damaging a hobby that involves supporting many businesses and 99.9% does no harm to anyone. The majority of the 0.1% being people who hurt their animals or release them into the wild.

I thought there was a global pandemic, debt issues, people without jobs, healthcare, education, etc.

I guess destroying the reptile hobby is more important. Wow, was I off base. Good thing I am not an elected official who fully understands this.

I am sure others will chime in here but my thumbs are getting tired. Used to using the computer.

My apologies for giving such a strong opinion. I usually try to avoid that on public forums.

In closing. This smells worse than colubrid poop.

It's because now, more than ever, idiots in power believe they can get away with whatever stupid BS they want.

Controversial opinion right off the bat here, but this needs to be said so people understand exactly why this is happening so rapidly and rampantly. The response to the virus has not only been EXTREMELY overreactive, but what we're seeing with the slew of attacks on the herpetological community is but one sector of the many aspects of freedom under assault. Because of the mass compliance with all the lockdowns and general fearmongering to completely alter how we as a species function, that sent a very strong message to the powers that be of what else they can restrict and limit in terms of what we can and can't do.

For the past entire year, we've been demanded to not leave our homes, see our friends and families, hold events, run businesses, and just live our freaking lives. You really think they're gonna stop there? No. They have free reign to keep eating away at our freedoms and God-given rights because they know they can now. In this instance, all they have to say is "We can't let you own animals in case they cause another pandemic!" and there you go. Countless stories like it are happening everywhere, no matter what sector of society or what kind of hobby you're in, the "For your safety" mentality has ruined and continues to ruin so much for everybody involved.

Re: USARK: Lacey Act bill update! S626 & more...

If one side supports something, the other will vote against it just because. I'll keep my opinions on a two party system to myself, but as an example, if the GOP put a reptile ban forward, the Dems would fight it because the GOP put it forward. If the Dems put forth something reducing restrictions on reptiles, the GOP would fight it because it's the Dems.

That being said, I get it, I understand why there have to be laws when it comes to imported species. Some morons released a bunch of burms in the Everglades, now they have a big problem. Here in Georgia we have a wild population of Argentine black and white tegus that the state is trying to deal with, because people released them when they got too big. Some of these issues can be solved by responsible breeders and pet stores. If a pet store has the conversation with a potential Tegu buyer "hey just so you know, this thing is gonna get 4 foot long, this is the type of enclosure you need, do you have the space, can you do this?"

Politicians are the number 1 issue sure, but we have to do a better job policing ourselves as well. My local reptile shop knows me, knows what I keep, and knows how long I've been keeping. If I walk in there today and try to buy a BP they're still going to have a conversation with me about it anyway. Every shop needs to adopt that attitude, and of course once the animal leaves the store there's nothing they can do about the keeper, but at least they did their due diligence and made sure that people are being educated before walking out the door.

You can use https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/117/s626 to monitor progress on this bill. Fortunately it's in the early stage so there is time to oppose it.

Also note that the sponsor and co-sponsor are from Florida and Hawaii, two states that are the most vulnerable to the introduction of non-native species. When contacting your legislators you can point out that these states can create their own laws regarding injurious species, and that violations of those state laws would be covered under the Federal Lacey Act already if the species were shipped into the state, so there is no need to muck further with the federal law.

Now I am not saying that doesn't happen because it does and it is wrong, but a large part of the invasive population was due to Hurricane Andrew destroying some reptile import facilities. just FYI, the more you know, and all that

I was aware of this, but Burmese pythons have been an invasive species in Florida before Andrew came through. I'm not saying that the only reason we have invasive species is because of irresponsible pet ownership, but it's definitely an issue that we can address on our own. No hurricane released tegus all over Georgia, similar to red lion fish in Florida, someone just turned them loose.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying that government overreach isn't an issue that we all need to be pushing back on. I'm just saying that there are other issues that need to be addressed as well. If we're trying to find a solution to a problem we need to address everything contributing to that problem.

This was just posted to me (again?) today- I didn't re-read it word for word so I'm not sure if there are any changes to the above, & anyway, a little "bump" never hurts...

Look at the bill tracker link I posted. It's not even been referred to a committee yet.
