Hardwood Bark as Cork Bark Alternative?

Any good reason(s) that I wouldn't want to use harvested hardwood bark as an alternative to buying cork wood bark? Any reason(s) I shouldn't use something like the pictured after cleaning and cooking it? The only thing I can think of is that it's definitely harder and maybe too scratchy.

I've never used hardwood bark in a reptile enclosure so I won't speak to that. What I can say is that cork park is made up of a compound that makes it naturally mold and mildew resistant. With a more humid species, constantly misting, or constantly being at high humidity, I'm concerned that hardwood bark might mold or grow mildew.

I can tell you from using hardwood mulch in my yard that it will grow fungus when it gets wet, which is why I don't use it anymore. I know a reptile enclosure and my yard are two very different environments, but I'd rather not risk it.

I think it's worth a try- I wouldn't worry about the texture difference- it's way less scratchy than some branches etc. Especially when it's free & available. Just make sure you get the "little critters" out of it by baking.

That's "faux" (fake) not real wood tree bark.
