I just caught this today and thought the camera work was great.

That was an awesome video with some great camera work! I could watch that kind of stuff for hours! There was a lot to digest in there for me. The main takeaway was that there’s nothing more beautiful and brutal as nature, and that, try as we might, there’s no way to accurately replicate nature either. I sometimes feel guilty for keeping these amazing animals in captivity, strictly for my enjoyment, but on the other hand I also believe that we can still give them a great life free of the threats, predators, and dangers in the wild.

It's so awesome to really see snakes in nature. I got a kick out of the climbing done by that annulated tree boa- the way he wrapped around a long leaf that I was sure he couldn't climb!

Seeing the boas in nature, and climbing, and being so active, was cool. Makes me wonder if we are keeping ours "fat and lazy?" I get my boas out for social and active time, but not exactly climbing trees!

EL-Ziggy - you make a great point though. Although "fat and lazy," they are also safe and happy. Hmmmmmmm. I felt the same way when I kept Frontosa (large Cihclids from a huge lake in Africa). I kept 12 of them in a 240G tank (8X2X2'). Not exactly an entire lake. However, happy, safe, and they bred.

I do not know the right answer and there probably isn't one. Our "pets" don't know any different and are probably cool with the regular feedings and lack of danger, if they could think about it anyway. Wild boas probably enjoy climbing and being free.

Of course, as we know, snakes cannot appreciate since they have no frontal lobe. So, we worry about it more than they do. People say on here all the time things like, "snakes enjoy killing and hunting," but we know that's not true. We anthropomorphize a lot.

The reality is there are pros and cons to keeping snakes in captivity. There are also pros and cons to nature. Nature isn't always kind and people are destroying Boa habitats left and right.

It also reminds me that when I had that BCI & would stroll around my back yard with her, she often showed a willingness to climb a tree, never mind the fact that they're some 50+ feet & not at all leaning for assistance. Obviously I couldn't indulge her whims on that, but maybe she'd have done even better than I thought? As long as it wasn't right after lunch... Yes, it's really nice to see them more active, & following all those scent trails.

I really can't wait Dave.
Not for being 50 like(don't bother me really) but to hopefully see the boas in the wild definitely going to organise a herping trip in the jungle, the hotel is on the edge of a national park and there's loads of pics of snakes lizards, sloths and monkeys in the grounds of the hotel

Envious of your proposed Costa Rica trip Richard! I'd love to do something similar one day.

Boas do love to climb and are very good at it! As an indoor safe alternative, mine sometimes enjoy exploring the cat trees (cats are kept separate). No current photos but here's an old one from 2000 of 2 diff boas having fun. You can make jungle gyms and lean large wood against walls/windows and they can go explore. I used to have a whole room with tunnels and branches and would just let the big boas go in there for a few hours, I need to do that again.
