Carpet Python Cage Size?

I'm looking into possibly getting a carpet python in the near future. I was wondering what the appropriate size enclosure for an adult female would be? I am looking into getting AP PVC enclosures and was wondering if the T10 would work (48x24x15)? Ideally I want something potentially stackable with T8s.

I've even heard that the T6 (36x24x24) would be better because of the height? I'm not sure.

I'd imagine 2' tall is better because they really do like to climb, but I'd still try to get 4'+ in length. T12 is 4'x2'x2', T20 is 6'x2'x2'. Me personally I would go with T20 for an adult female if you have the room but T12 would stack nicely with T8 and would suffice if you are really tight on space.

I have most of my carpets in T10s (48x24x15). Those are the smallest cages I’d recommend for an adult carpet. I’d agree that a 4x2x2 or 6x2x2 would be more ideal.

I have an adult male in a 6x2x2 and he uses all of it. I wouldn't go any smaller for a female. They are very active and love their perches.

I’m all for larger enclosures whenever possible too. My carpet experiences are quite different. Only one of my five carpets is what I’d consider an active snake. The others are pretty sedentary. They’re usually perched on a branch or shelf or occasionally tucked in a hide. It seems like they have a few favorite spots in their enclosures and pretty much stick to those. I rarely see them stretched out or roaming their enclosures like my bullsnakes or olive python. My coastal is the one exception. Even when I take them out for exercise, I’ll put them on the jungle gym and they’ll slither about for a few minutes and perch. The coastal is the only one that gets down onto the ground and explores the room.

Mine are all relatively sedentary as well. They do like their perches though. I plan to have mine in either 4x30x18 or 4x30x24 with shelves, perches, and ceiling mounted hides as adults. If they look to need more space then I’ll spring for 6’ cages, but that will be years down the road if ever I imagine.

I personally wouldn't go any smaller than a 6'x2'x2' for your average ~6' female carpet, with something like a 6'x3'x3' or 6'x2'x4' being more ideal. A 4'x2'x2' would be an absolute minimum in my book. Like the others have said, carpets like to perch and can be pretty active. They're definitely a snake that would appreciate some extra room to roam, stretch, and climb.

I have a Papuan carpet who's due to arrive... sometime soon (darn winter!), and I don't plan on going any smaller than 4'x2'x2' for their adult enclosure. Even then, I'd consider that their temporary adult enclosure, and I'd like to bump them up to something larger down the road. Potentially all the way up to something like a 6'x2'x4' depending on how large they grow, how active they are, and how much they like to perch.

What kind of Carpet Python?

For larger carpets, I would say the height would be appreciated as would length. 6X2X2' is my recommendation for a 7-8+ft carpet. An 7ft carpet can get away with a little less floor space than a 7ft Boa for example, because although boas will climb, they won't spend 50%+ of their time curled up on a perch. They are also thinner bodied than a BI of the same size, for example. My Boas all have 6X2X1' tanks. I would like to give them more height, but space is limited. I chose floor space here for them.

For IJ's and Darwins, for example, I would say 4X2X1.5' is okay, or even 4X2'X15."

Yafe, my CP, is an IJ/Darwin Hybrid. He's 4 years old in June, and all of 5- 5 1/2 feet and 800g now. He does great in a 4X2X1.5'! However, he loves to perch and this height allows room for 2 perches, front and back and lower in the front, and room for a big water bowl, hides, etc. It also leaves room for an RHP. Carpet's enjoy digesting on their perches when possible. When digesting Yafe spends about 30% of his time on the heat tape (under the RHP) and 70% of his time perched under the RHP.

I would imagine a 15" high tank would limit your RHP options and also allow for a perch, a hide, etc. for a larger carpet. You might get away with it with a smaller carpet, but it would be closer and/or you would be limited to one perch and perch placement might be an issue. CP's like to get as high as they can in the cage. For what's it worth, I also have Yafe's tank stacked and he's the second to top tank. So he's a good 5 feet off the ground looking out from his perches.
