Considering, you just got your first snake 4 months ago, I recommend that you wait. What are you interested in breeding?

Good morphs are the ones that are interesting to you and that you don’t mind caring for indefinitely in the event that you are unable to find homes for the hatchlings you produce.

I'm not planning on breeding anytime soon, maybe in a few years after I get a few more bp's. I know that prices and demand will change but I mostly just want to do it to have a neat project. I don't know much about genes or morphs so I figured I would ask

Most important is what interests you.
From there can hop on morph market and put in some genes and browse around. See what other genes in the mix peak your fancy. Or just scroll through the for sales and start drooling over all the possibilities!

Well, this is a good place to hang around & keep reading up. I've bred some other kinds of snakes (not BPs) but you never want to rush this anyway. You'll get far better results with snakes that are fully mature, not rushed into reproduction when they're barely old enough...even if it is feasible. I never bred snakes younger than 4 years, fyi. You also don't want to breed a snake that you haven't had for a while (best would be a year, IMO) because re-homing is stressful, & it also takes TIME for subtle issues to become obvious & to be treated. You want any snake you breed to have the best health prior to putting that strain on their body.

You also want to make sure that any snakes you produce will have good homes- if you care about them, you don't want to "flood the market"- there are already so many ppl breeding BPs, & consider that in an "iffy" economy, people don't have money to spend on pets. I don't want to sound like a "wet blanket" but please think about all this, & don't let your enthusiasm drive your ambitions. If it's a few more cool snakes (or a "neat project") you want, it's honestly cheaper to just buy them- when you breed snakes, there can be expenses you might not anticipate (such as vet care) & some challenging issues, such as what if you produce a bunch of snakes that are viable but not salable? (ie. hatch with defects) Please think about all this, much as we welcome your fresh enthusiasm.

Not a wet blanket at all. Im new to this forum as well as this hobby so I appreciate all feedback. Even if I do breed, which is a small possibility, I'll make sure they have a good home, even if they don't sell. it'll probably be 4 or 5 before I start seriously consider breeding.

    Re: Starter Morphs?

Start buying female single gene hatchlings . And if you still want to breed in 2-3 years they will be ready. You breed what you like and be careful. I see to many people selling whole collections because they wanted to breed and went nuts buying snakes and it never pans out. Most of my time isn’t even on snakes it’s rats because that’s the biggest part is feeding the snakes. When those females get big enough get a good male you can breed to them.

What is popular changes constantly. Just pick some you really love and dive in to studying how to identify them, how they react in different combos, if there are any kind of health concerns breeding them to certain morphs, and so on. I have several folders of pictures I have saved to help inspire my project ideas and to reference when I'm trying to figure out what a new secret combo is made up of.

Save up a load of money because it isn't cheap. So many people (in any business) fail because they didn't have enough money saved to cover things they didn't expect. It's the number one cause of failure.
