    Radiant heat panel question.

Hello, I have a Animal Plastics t8 with a pro products heat panel that I'm having a hard time getting right. The surface temp under the panel is getting to 104 degrees when on at 100%. Im using a herpstat 2 set to 88 with the probe 3/4 down the wall on the warm side which gets the cool Side to 78 ambient. My problem is the 104 surface temp under the heat panel, and not sure what is best to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Forgot to say its for a ball python.

I had this exact same setup, and it never worked right with the probe by the heat panel for me. What worked very well was to actually let the probe hang a couple inches off the substrate on the cool side of the enclosure, set the temp 78-80 and monitor the temp under the heat panel. This came recommended from Bob at ProProducts. The idea is that even if you have too warm of a basking spot with the setup (I never did), the bp has correct ambient cool side temp it can move to if needed. Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention something else, putting the thermostat probe under the panel and setting to 90F works much better if your room is relatively warm (75F+ consistently) HOWEVER, putting the thermostat probe on the cool side and setting to 80F seems to work better if your room is cooler (65F-74F). This is just what Ive found from years of tinkering with the setup. Others might have something different.

Agree with Kevin. I have a T8 and a T10, with the same RHP, and have it set up the exact same way, on the cool side, set to 80 for a ball python. Worked the best for me. On the T10, I played around with all different ways of placement, and in the end the cool side gave me the best result.

Did you hang it on the back wall about center of the cool side for your T10? I have one on the way (eventually) and plan on running it for a week or so before transferring my ball over but was wondering what the best set up would be. Same RHP as you I believe 75watt, and a herpstat 2.

I hung it on the back, about 5 inches off 5he ground, 3 inches off the side. Gave me the best temps all around. I had it running about two weeks in test mode before putting my girl in there. I had temp probes in 4 different spots to watch temps and how they change.

RHPs are tricky to dial in at first, but once they’re figured out you’re pretty much good to go unless you change rooms, houses, etc.

I very much agree with this. I keep a warm room with probes under panels set close to 90° and it works incredibly well. I also cool my room to 68° or so at nights in the winter and my cool side temps in some cages will touch 73° at night during the lowest couple weeks of the winter cooling period. The key is knowing your personal group of animals and how to micro manage individual enclosures if needed. Sometimes it’s frustrating and sometimes it’s an intriguing puzzle to figure out, but often a bit of both
