To error is human I guess

Interesting story...I was shuffling critters in and out of their enclosures while doing some spot cleaning when my gf calls me into the other room. I knew it would only be a few minutes so I leave my coastal carpet on the jungle gym. He always stays on there for at least 15 -20 minutes before he makes his way to the floor if he comes down at all. My lady gets a little long winded but no big deal. Then I make a quick pit stop by the loo. I get comfortable and start scrolling through news and social media on my cell phone when I hear my Amstaff Terrier rumbling about in the hangout room. I figured she was just playing with one of her toys but she’s been chewing on stuff lately so I call for my son to check on her.

DAD!!! Do you know you left a snake out in here?! Oh crap, that’s right!! To my surprise, the snake had made his way off the jungle gym and was underneath the table that some of my enclosures sit on. The dog is too big to get under the table but I’m sure she gave the snake quite a scare. I chase the pup away and scoop up the snake. I look him over really well and he’s just fine so I return him to his enclosure. Then I kick myself in the bum for getting distracted and off task.

    Stay focused y’all.

I'm glad everything turned out okay! My wife has two cats and one very very early morning, while changing food and water for my green cheek conure, I forgot to re-latch the door, of course she, being the smart bird she is, decided to come out and greet everyone. Fortunately she's a tad big for the cats to make a meal out of, but I was cussing myself for even inviting the opportunity.

I did a very similar thing recently with my scrub. Scary, but it happens!

I think this has happened to most of us - I find it's easiest to get too complacent with my snakes that are really well socialized and accustomed to certain routines outside of their enclosures. Thanks for posting, as I always can use a reminder that it doesn't take much for a distracted moment to turn into a potential big mistake. Really glad everything worked out for all of your critters!

I like crazy stories with happy endings. Glad nothing went wrong but elevated blood pressure. Lots going on these days, easier to get distracted. ✌️

Hey, I've gotten distracted before too. And I'll tell you, it's as if snakes somehow (?) KNOW that we're away... & I mean the ones that "never move, always sit there for x minutes", but suddenly when we're out of the room, they feel bolder to move away & explore. One of the funniest ones was the large BCI that I had for many years- she was motionless on my bed while I went in & out of the room, retrieving & folding laundry. The one time I was gone a FEW minutes longer, she made a dash for it. One of my dresser drawers was part-way open, & that's where she went: she stuffed herself into a corner & HISSSSSED at me when I found her! Doesn't matter if the snake is parked someplace, or if they're on your lap & you doze off for a few minutes...I tried that too, once. Snake went right under my chair & pitched me a hissy-fit when I went to retrieve the little brat-snake... It's as if somehow they KNOW when we're not paying attention.

Related story... doing a water change on my 75 gallon fish tank. Upon starting to refill process, which can take 5-10 minutes on a slow flow, I walked away and got distracted paying bills online next room over. Well... forgot all about it, and tank started overflowing. Luckily, I was close enough to hear the waterfall. But, it was a lot of water, and a mess to clean under the furniture.

    Glad your snake was ok.

Well since we're telling stories about being silly. I took the top off my caiman enclosure and placed the heat lamp on the shelving unit to clean the enclosure. Later, I was smelling some smoky smell, and I don't have a good sense of smell. I could not find the source anywhere. I looked for so long, I almost just gave up and thought it was something outside. Then finally, I remembered that heat lamp sitting on the wood shelf. Yea, I almost burnt my house down.

Just today I was the setting all the equipment for my 125 aquarium project back up (finally put in the new substrate and some of the new, real non-fake decor yay) and it has dual canister filters. But I messed up and put the tubing outlets on the wrong ends (output and input were switched) so they weren't priming properly. And in a horrendous move, instead of just switching out the pieces on the ends, I stupidly unscrewed one of the tubings off the canister which meant water got everywhere and my poor mother had to help with the mess while I had a giant self-esteem episode from the mistake. Sigh...
