    Eastern Indigo?

Has anyone around here had any experience with eastern indigo snakes? I know that they require permits and such...but they are awesome looking huge snakes!

I haven't owned one.. but it's one of my favorite snakes! Permits depend on your state.. some states don't require one as long as the snake is purchased within the state. I hear that the permits are easy to get as well.

Indigos are not constrictors.. they prefer to 'bash' their prey.. or even eat it alive. They are the largest snake native to the US.

    Re: Eastern Indigo?

Very interesting doing research on these snakes. Especially how they are naturally immune to the venom of all North American venomous snakes and how they don't constrict, they grab and "body press" their prey or eat it live.

Some sites said they can hit 9 feet, others said more like 5 to 7...wonder which was right?

5-7 feet is normal. I think 9' is the max.

    Re: Eastern Indigo?

The Eastern Indigo is the most beautiful snake in my opinion. This picture here is very retro, approximately 35-40 years ago. This Indigo was just over 7 1/2 feet long. We had two of them, this one and a smaller 6 foot one. This picture is of my little brother and sister when we lived in Merritt Island Florida. Back at the time that we had these Indigos, permits were not required, but due to all the developments being put up and the destruction of thier natural habitat, it became necessary to put them on the endangered list and make you have permits to posess them back in early to mid 70's.

....Tattooed people don't care if you're not tattooed.

Nothing like a giant all black snake! That's a great picture.
