    Pungent Dirty Feet Odor

I recently started breeding mice and i’m happy to say they took right off like crazy, but the smell is awful! I have pine pellets on the bottom of the tubs with pine shavings over top. Urine and feces odor isn’t a problem, but rather a pungent odor that smells like dirty feet! The smell is even there immediately after cleaning the tubs. Can anyone tell me what is causing that odor and how to prevent it?

    Thanks.

The way to lose the odor is to get rid of the mice. Male mice have more odor than the females (for scent-marking & all) but none of them smell like roses, ok? Poor time to find out, lol. (I've raised mice & other rodents for a couple decades+++. It's not for everyone.)

Aaargh! Sooo... That dirty feet smell is normal? I’ve been breeding rats for a few years now and they sure don’t smell like that...

Yeah, mice are a whole 'nother ballgame. I've kept both rats and mice and you definitely know when there are mice in the house.

Rats sorta reminded me of stale popcorn. I've never been sure how to describe the way mice reek, so thanks- that's as good as any. Regular cage cleaning helps, or nose-plugs... And don't keep extra males- they fight, so I don't think you would anyway.

Get rid of the mice an raise ASF. Less smell! But really, line the bottom with newspaper an then the horse stall pellets (your using pine ones). Other then that the pine used must be kiln dried. Or it’s bad for the rodents.

Now, can you put an exhaust vent over the cage area? Remove the stale air an the smell will leave also.

    Good luck!

That’s actually a great idea and that’s what I think I’m going to do. The foul odor coming off of these mice just isn’t going to work for me and I need to be able to breed them in the house throughout the winter for hatchlings, because I keep my rat racks in the garage and breeding slows down too much during the cold months...
