    Question Terrarium Door Alarms?

Hi everyone! I joined this forum because I could not find a good answer to this online.

Does some kind of alarm exist that will, say, beep if the sliding glass door of my snake's vivarium is left open for a certain length of time? All I could find were beepers for doors, but I think those may be too large or not "line up" correctly on a sliding vivarium door, even the ones made for sliding house doors. You would think these would exist for people who keep hots or something (I don't fyi but I'm trying to guard against absentminded me or my family). Any ideas? Even something that would automatically close the door would be good, but I can't imagine anything like this for a sliding glass door.

How DIY capable are you? I doubt anything exists specifically for terrariums in that regard, but the concepts are fairly simple, I think.

For the alarm, you need a magnetic switch, like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F314V3Z..._tCdSFbWQMZPE8. One for the door, one for the side, connected to an alarm.

That self closing door would be much more complex, but definitely doable. You just need a motor on a track. But you dont want to crush your snake in a motorized door. Plus if you're forgetting to close the sliding door, I think you have bigger problems.

I'm fairly DIY capable! As long as I have directions, I can probably make this myself with minimal distress. fwiw I would prefer an alarm instead of a self-closing door, for the reason you said (and the fact that I didn't make this cage myself and don't have many tools to modify it, especially glass). I have seen those little switches before but the only thing about the wiring that I hesitated over was where I would attach the alarm part, since it'd be wired to that alarm. I guess I could attach it to the side of the tank or something (it's glass) but on the sides I have the paper background taped to it and the top is a screen mesh... Just not sure where I'd physically attach it to the tank. I'm also not sure where to search for an alarm, like a small battery-operated one that just beeps when it needs to and shows me a light to say it's still alive? Also, for the cage, just fyi it is a Carolina Custom Cages cage that's 4'x18"x18".

I actually don't have a snake yet, and won't be buying one until next year; I'm working on making it bioactive and having the plants get established in the meantime, so I do have plenty of time to figure it out. Currently it's seven blue death-feigning beetles and several seedlings that just sprouted. One time, I left one side open and one of the beetles came out, and I really don't want that happening with my eventual snake. This way, even if it escaped, at least the alarm would beep at me a few minutes later and I could minimize my snake hurting itself or disappearing in my house somewhere.

This would probably fit on the door and the side edge.

    Re: Terrarium Door Alarms?

You can probably link these smart door alarms so that when it's open you have like a red bulb on, a red smart bulb or red bulb in a smart switch. And you could do it anywhere in the house.

    Re: Terrarium Door Alarms?

Thanks for the replies. I guess the issue I'm seeing with the ready made ones is that it looks like they just send you an alarm when the door is opened, but that's not what I want. I'm going to be opening the cage door, and I don't have worries that someone else in my house will open the door, I just want an alert when it is left open for more than a few minutes. Do any of you know if there is an alarm that can do this, or if I can find one that I can make myself?

I can definitely DIY but not really in the way of programming; if I have to make this myself, it'd have to be something that I don't need training to do and can just follow instructions. I looked for a long time at the manufactured door alarms on Amazon but they seem to just be security alerts, so it's only giving you a notification when the door is opened. I also would really just prefer something to beep at me, from the source, because A) my phone might be sitting in another room somewhere, and B) I work in the room next to where my snake will be, and the cage is in my bedroom, so would be able to hear if the alarm beeps pretty much any time during the day or night.

Like even if I got something that beeped incessantly the second it were disconnected from its other half, that would be better than the "open door alert" things that notify me on a phone app, which I think wouldn't help me at all because I might not see/hear that. Isn't there some simple way to make something that beeps when disconnected? Or a delayed beep once disconnected?
