    Scale Rot??

We rescued this guy back in march, he sheds well, eats well...just shed about 2 weeks ago, ate about a week ago... We use coconut husk as a substrate, stays fairly dry unless he tips over his bowl.

I do believe that is scale rot. You can buy ointment drops that go in a warm bath meant to cure that. Hope the poor baby gets better

    1. How long have you had your ball python?

Since March, got him for free

    2. How old (or how big) is your snake?

Not sure age, not sure how big but he's the biggest out of our 5. I assume he is pretty much a full grown ball python

    3. Does it eat on a regular schedule?

    Yes, every 10 days

    4. How long since its last meal?

    a week

    5. What type/size prey is being offered?

F/T medium rats, eats every time.

    6. How often do you offer food?

    every 10-14 days

    7. What type and size of enclosure does it live in?

    41qt sterilite tub (rack system)

    8. What are you using as substrate? If it has depth, how deep is it?

Coconut husk, 1inch or so deep

    9. What type of heating do you use?

    Ultratherm heat pads

    10. Do you use a thermostat to control temperatures?

    I use a rheostat

    11. What do you use to measure/monitor temperatures?

    IR temp gun

    12. What are the surface and ambient temperatures in the enclosure?

90-95 on the hot side, 70-75 on the cool. 80-85 in the middle

    13. What is the average humidity level?

    Not sure

    14. How many and what type of hides does the snake have?

1-he has a turtle shell thing the previous owner gave us with him. Also have a black plastic hide box but he doesnt like it so we dont use it

    15. Is water readily available at all times?

    Yes

    16. Does the snake live alone or does it share the enclosure with anything else?

    Alone

    17. How often and for how long is the snake typically handled?

many times a day, 10-15 minutes each time

    18. Does the snake have any medical history (old injuries or illnesses)?

Missing an eye (we assume its from the previous owner feeding live, leaving it in his enclosure with him)

    19. Do you have any other reptiles? Have you brought in any new reptiles recently?

Yes, 4 other ball pythons. No new.

    20. Is there anything specific or unique about your situation that we should be aware of?

Get a povidone iodine solution at walgreens and bathe him in it every few days. Its a good antiseptic. Coco fiber is awesome, but it can hold a lot of humidity in, so you could switch to something a bit drier for the moment until the scale rot heals. Some people just use newspaper, or something like repti bark.
