    Enrichment challenge

I'm not going to actually challenge anyone. But I did watch this video and I think it's worth sharing.

    https://youtu.be/pK5ulFNgTag

I personally change each enclosure every time I do a thorough cleaning. Different hides, branches, rocks, plants, different layout, etc.... It's fun for me to "create" new enclosure setups and the snakes benefit from the enrichment. Win win!

I've really grown to love watching Riley's videos. You can just SEE his passion.

    Re: Enrichment challenge

Great topic to share, Craig! I also enjoy Riley’s enthusiasm for providing for his animals. He’s a good dude.

I’ve been considering some things of that sort for my critters too. Maybe cork bark tiles on the tops of their shelves, a handful of bedding swapped between cages, exchanging branches, a hide/tote filled with a different substrate than the rest of the cage... the list can go on and on.

Sometimes I just sit in my room looking at the empty enclosures yet to be decked out and just imagine all the possibilities I can explore in them. Heat Panels are ordered for the divided 8’ cage. Have plans for sky hides on the ceiling and under the shelf as well.

Lots of room to play with stuff here and I’m pumped.

I thought it was a pretty good topic. I'm a little surprised it hasn't drawn any traffic. Oh well.

I've been washing all my hides and decor before swapping them out. I'll probably skip that step moving forward unless they're noticably in need of a cleaning. But I like the idea of different scents as a form of enrichment too. Considering how prominent there sense of smell is it makes sense that scent would be a form of enrichment.

I talked to Riley a bit about how he suggests hiding prey items from the Morelia. Since they're perched and ready to go I figured it would be tough to get prey past them.
He suggested observing what time of night they typically venture out and hiding the prey a bit before that. Makes sense. I don't know how soon I'll be experimenting with that, but it's in my plans. I've been planning on a slightly varied diet for them, so this could be a cool way to achieve the variety while adding enrichment.

My biggest concern with swapping items between cages without cleaning them is the possible transmission of a virus/bacteria. There is always a chance you could have an animal in your collection that is a carrier but doesn't show any symptoms.

Another good you tube channel worth checking out that covers things about behavior, enrichment, trarget training, and shifting snakes is Lori Torrini. She does a lot with bredli.

One simple enrichment activity I have tried lately with much success is temporarily adding cut flowers or branches in enclosures after I have been working in the garden. So far all of my snakes seem to really enjoy exploring these offerings - they'll spend up to an hour just smelling and crawling around them.

Thanks! I am familiar with Lori Torrini, she is good. I like her channel.

And you're right, swapping out items does go against everything we learn in Snake101.

My thoughts are, they're all within about 8 feet of each other in my snake room. So wouldn't anything carry within the room anyhow?
The health of my animals is priority number one, no doubt. I also have a ton of respect for Riley, Ryan and some of the others I learn from. I trust in them and their practices.

Does putting prey in PVC pipes count as enrichment? Been doing that since the 70's. Always clean what goes in an comes out of your cages.

I really like using rope. Now, that most of the cages are AP PVC, I run an eye bolt an attach ropes for the noodles to climb or hang on. Rope is cheap, use it an toss when it's time. Netting can work but the hole size has to be larger then the snake. Safety first an all that.
