Power out in CT - will be for days - Thank you generator

I have no internet at my house so I probably won’t be updating much. Went out to grab some stuff and have data on the phone which I don’t have at the house.

However, our neighborhood and half our town is out of power. Luckily, we have a whole home generator and the reptiles are doing great.

I wanted everyone to know that the Dakski crew is save and sound and well.

I also wanted to take a minute and encourage people to plan for power outages.

I’ll write more about steps to take when I can use the computer again.

i hope everyone is safe and well.

Glad to hear the Dakski crew is all good.

We got the updates it was coming through my home town headed straight to where I currently live. We didn't get touched though. Nothing but a handful of small downed limbs/twigs to pick up.

    Keep us updated.

    Hi,

Glad you have the generator for backup.

A long term power cut is one of my worst nightmares.

I'm currently in CT and experienced the storm. Luckily we have a generator and internet, but even if we didn't luckily I'm away from home and don't have to worry about all the animals. My car did break down at the beginning of the trip, though, so its repair is going to end up delayed. I plan on borrowing a car so I can go back home and take care of the animals (getting close to culling time for the rodents), and then we'll have to come up at least partway to get my car later.

Hopefully the aftermath gets cleared up soon and things return to normal. I saw quite a bit of damages on the news, which will probably hit even harder with covid.

I've dealt with power outages in the winter, and it isn't fun. At least this time of year, with this weather, I really wouldn't have to do anything extra for my animals. Only issue may be water, and boredom for us (as I don't have a generator back at home).

God, I was just fretting about power outages yesterday. It gets hot where I am, and I just saw a post on another board from a person whose air conditioning went out while he was at work; he came home to two of his snakes having died from overheating.

I got an email a few months back from Home Depot promoting generators. I think it's time to buckle down and seriously research one. I have emergency plans in place that would allow me to manage a short-term outage in hot or cold weather, and I am prepped for a sudden evacuation - I'm not paranoid; I live in wildfire country. But the need for a short-notice evacuation could happen to anybody for any number of reasons. But a few days of no power in extreme temps would be really bad for most of my animals.

Re: Power out in CT - will be for days - Thank you generator

Still no power but generator is going strong and all is well.

Additionally, the reptile room is in the finished basement, so it never gets over 80f down there. However. I run ac unit to keep it in the low 70s and take moisture out. It does get damp. We also use the rest of the finished basement as a living room/TV area so it’s tolerable for us too.

The reptiles continue be doing fine, although I held off feeding Behira and Jeff until power comes back - hopefully soon. I do turn the generator off a few hours during the day to let it cool down.

Not long enough for the tanks to cool enough to hurt digestion, but I’d rather be extra careful and the snakes will be no worse for the extra couple of days without food.

That reminds me. If you do have snakes and know a storm could be coming. Do not feed. Don’t risk a sick and or regurgitating snake on top of one that might have to be moved (to a warmer or cooler area).

I will check in when I can. In the meantime I hope everyone else is safe and well.
