Never have a problem. Could be what Phone they have. The Iphone app works perfect.

Yes I have them mounted for ambient, But I have one that I pace around when I am dialing in new enclosures. I will put it under my RHP for example for 24hrs to set hot spot.. then move it to the cool side under the coolside RHP in 8’ enclosures... they are a Object so they heat up to surface temp directly under RHP’s.
    Great tool.

I agree with Craig that's not the best test. Hit your wall thermostat at the same distance you would hit the tank floor and they should be within 1F of each other.
A wall thermostat is not a good way to dial in a laser. The wall thermistat reads ambient, your wall is cooler or warmer depending on if it’s an interior or exterior wall so the laser picks up on that instead. My lasers are off 3-4 degrees from ambient wall thermometers/Tstats and I bought a couple of the best ones I could that were under $100.
Just like myself sometimes we look into things to much. All thermometers are said to be within 1 to 3° off and that will not bother these animals. Sometimes I have to remind myself the weather they live in isnt exact either. Hahahaa

Sorry, but this isn't an accurate test.
After doing a little research, it turns out the ice water test IS an accurate test. https://www.thermoworks.com/pdf/IR-G...structions.pdf

Old thread...but just gotta put in a word in case folks run across this. Liquid water at normal atmospheric pressures cannot be >212F. The pot can be hotter, but water at sea level cannot be hotter than 212F; above that it becomes steam. Steam can absolutely be hotter than 212F, but at this point it's no longer liquid water, it's a gas. This is why pressure cookers work the way they do.
