I would assume that the Rhino rat snake starts his shed by loosening the skin around his mouth, as others do, but it must be a challenge to then get that prominent
snoot completely peeled? That Malagasy leaf-nosed snake is another unique-looking snake. I keep a Texas longnose snake but his nose is nowhere
near as long or pointed as all the ones above. (but he's a pretty tri-color, red, black & light yellow) I think those spider-tailed vipers are crazy
looking- otherwise it looks a lot like the sidewinders I used to keep, very similar coloration, just rougher scales & what a tail!

Is there any documentation on the function/use of these extended noses? I could assume its for burrowing or sensing, but would like to know if it's been investigated.

I’m honestly not sure although it’s very soft and bendy so nothing to do with burrowing..

I'm picturing "sword-fights" between rivals...

Very interesting, I imagined them stiffer than that. I couldn't easily find any info on the reason for it online.

It's like a "runaway" egg tooth? I wonder if they have unusually-tough eggs to get out of?
Or maybe they're evolving a rattle on the wrong end (their nose!)? Reminds me of that Far Side cartoon of a rattlesnake family...'mom' & 'dad' are on either side of 'junior' who persists in rattling his head instead of his tail, & the mom says to the dad "this is YOUR side of the family, you realize..."

On the weird looking side, both elephant trunk or tentacled snakes. I like aquatic snakes but too scared to try them yet.
