    BP Stuck in Enclosure

Just had a little scare while checking on my snakes. My BP was stoic and stretched out across the front glass. Something I’ve seen plenty of times at night but he’s always been ‘moving’ and never still in this position. As I looked closer, it almost seemed his head and neck were either pinched or nudged between the glass and the recessed top area of my AP T10 enclosure. I made several movements with my hands but he never flinched. I was getting a little nervous so I unlocked the cage doors and slowly moved the opposite door to gently push his head free which knocked him loose. Hopefully I’m worrying for nothing but I’ve never seen him like this. Here’s a picture which may be hard to make out his predicament.

    Re: BP Stuck in Enclosure

I have the same enclosed as you (or at least same brand, mine is the T8). And both my Mexican Black King and Ball Python have done this. Not so much anymore, but the ball used to do it often. If you don't know, or haven't seen them do it, it definitely looks like they're stuck. I think it's just the inquisitive nature. They get on in there, thinking they can go further, then just hang out there.

To me it doesn't look like your snake was in any danger, but rather sought out the tight fit as a way to 'hang on' there. ("Look Ma, no hands!") Glad he's OK.
Remember that in the wild they sometimes smush their way thru things (& yes, sometimes come to harm when they get stuck, like in bird-netting). The way
his mid-body is rippled in your photo also looks like his way of getting traction.

I once had a corn snake (with a nice flat tummy) that was able to slide vertically up a tall glass aquarium & then reach out with at least a third of his body pushing up on the lid, and the ONLY thing keeping him there was the near-suction from his ventral scales on the glass, & the part of his body wedged as best he could into the right angled corner formed by the glass & the screen top. It looked like a magic trick...it shouldn't have been possible, but that's what's so cool about snakes.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I'm relieved to hear that this is something normal. I was little taken back when he didn't flinch when I flashed some hand gestures to him while he was in this position. He's a rather secretive BP so I would of expected an immediate flop at the sign of me

He might have even fallen asleep like that...snakes do some pretty silly things sometimes, that's part of why I love them. And I'm not a "sir", btw.

    Re: BP Stuck in Enclosure

I have a great stiff foam background I made for my bp's tank, and I put in a small pvc pipe into the backdrop to give a place for the temp probe cords to run. Anyways, I panicked one day when I couldnt find him anywhere in his tank and couldnt figure out how he escaped. I finally noticed like an eighth of an inch of his tail sticking out of the bottom of the pvc pipe. I had to lure him out of the tube with a rat, and them promptly blocked the holes in the tubing.
