Biggest native snake in US a fearsome 9 feet is vanishing, Georgia study says
"The eastern indigo is North Americas biggest indigenous snake, growing to 9 feet, and it is found only in coastal Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi, experts say.
I have seen some that were 25 ft. long in South Douglas County when I was an employee of the state highway department 47 years ago,
Uhhh I believe someone is over exaggerating just a little......

So many ppl exaggerate snake sizes...I think it makes them sound braver to others for having survived the meeting?

I'm getting an eastern indigo in August! They're big but no 25 ft lol I think eye witness is about the most unreliable thing there is.

I live next to a large pond and nature reserve. I was walking my dog to a grass area close to the pond. It was early in the morning. I accidentally stepped on a large, beautiful black/blueish snake. We both freaked out and it ran into the bushes near the water. At the time I had no idea what it was. After looking it up online, it was an eastern indigo.
That was 7 years ago. One encounter. I still hope to see one (without stepping on it) but no luck. Most Floridians don't run into them at all, including herpers. I hope biologists will be able save and conserve them. Back then before I became a reptile keeper, the sight of that snake stays in my mind because of its beauty and size. It would be a shame to have these animals slowly dwindle and disappear from the wild.
