    thermostat placement

this might seem like a dumb question, but i always see people say different things... does the thermostat probe go underneath the heat mat? or inbetween the heat may and the cage? does it even make a difference? I always thought that it was in between the heat mat and the cage.

Ideally it would be sandwiched between the heat mat and the underside of the enclosure... but if the heat mat was pre-installed, or the thermostat probe is very thick, or for a variety of other reasons, you can put it under the heat mat. Just ensure that the whole enclosure is supported well so that the thermostat probe doesn't create a pressure point that can crack the enclosure floor, and I would minimize airflow around the probe so it accurately reads the heat mat temperature, and not the ambient temperature of the air under the enclosure.
