Moths and Butterflies
I thought I would start a post for the order of Lepidoptera. Ever since I was a kid I have been amazed with Butterflies and Moths. The color variations seem to be infinite and they come in a myriad of sizes. I always been drawn to the larger moths like the Cecropia, Polyphemus, Luna and the larger sphinx moths. When I was in elementary school, a friend of mine and I went out in the late fall and found dozens of Polyphemus and Cecropia cocoons. We put them in our houses and in the spring we watched them hatch and let them go.
Anyways, while visiting Florida last week I came across this beauty. I thought I would share it and launch this thread. There isn't anything for scale in the photo but this girl is about 4 inches across the wing span.
Feel free to share your photos of Moths and Butterflies. Please identify the species and location if you know what it is.

Re: Moths and Butterflies
Thanks LS. It's ironic that the two moths you've showed I am very familiar with. I hatched a lot of Cecropia moths back in the day and I used to have a Attacus Atlas mounted in a glass case that hung in my bedroom when I was a kid. I also had a Chrysirdia madagascariensis which is incredibly colorful. Thanks for the memories.

Worked in my yard today & found a beautiful Monarch butterfly...unfortunately, it was recently deceased...I first thought it was alive, sitting there.
Those are all gorgeous moths you've shared above...

When slugs were an issue in my garden I used beer traps to catch them. Luna moths would come in at night and sip the beer and were sleepy the next morning and make great photo subjects. I had photos of all sorts of color variations/patterns green, yellow, brown, but, my photos were lost in a hard drive failure and Photobucket erased my backups-even though I was a regular customer...
