Re: Adelita - 2019 Hypo Sonoran

Had some nice hang time with Adelita tonight. She continues to be the calmest, mellowest, and probably sweetest snake here. That earns her "open doors while Mom's in the room" privileges when she wants them.

Re: Adelita - 2019 Hypo Sonoran

Poor Adelita. She got a good-sized coco chip wedged in her mouth while striking at her link this morning. It was big enough to distress her and present an impaction risk if it went down, so I had to take her out, hold her down, and reach into her mouth to get it out. She wasn't too pleased with the whole ordeal and lost interest in her link after that. She was still hungry, though, so I thawed out a day-old-quail for her for a small bite that was greatly appreciated. Hopefully the next feeding won't be such a production!

Her Reptilink, ie. one of those sausages for reptiles. I'm trying to mix some alternate prey items into my snakes' diet so they're not feeding exclusively on (relatively) fatty rodents. Adelita's been open to them so far; hopefully the incident with the coco chip today won't put her off them.

Re: Adelita - 2019 Hypo Sonoran

Caught Adelita in the midst of her night cruise and let her have a little hang time with her enclosure door open. She was happy sitting on her "porch," but wasn't when I had to shut the door!

Both of the boas have been acting very hungry since our regular summer storms and rain started up. It's barely been a week since Adelita was last fed and she's already showing signs of being hungry again. While I'm all for feeding seasonally and as snakes get truly hungry, I don't want to pound them with food.

Adelita's loving the summertime. She's been a lot livelier and extra iridescent as of late, though the pictures I've gotten don't really do her justice on the latter front. It's almost like having a rainbow boa, but with a better attitude!

Whoa, that shot of Adelita adjusting her jaw is wicked cool! I've never been able to catch it on camera when my own boas do that.

Re: Adelita - 2019 Hypo Sonoran

Adelita finally shed today! Took her out to the porch for a few quick pics in full sunlight -- the smoke plume going over the region made for some interesting lighting, though.

Heard back from her cage manufacturer (Kages), and it turns out they do offer screens for post-purchase installs! So, she'll probably get switched over to light-based heating in the relatively near future.

Up first, though: I decided it's time to finally screen all the snakes for arena- and nidovirus proactively. Have some swabs on order from RAL/VetDNA and will be testing all the kids when they come in. At the very least, the boas will be screened for arenavirus and Pandora will be screened for nidovirus.

She's a beautiful boa, & on doing the health screenings too. Your snakes are obviously getting great care.
