Anyone go kayaking?

I just got my first kayak today. My boyfriend has been doing it for a few years and I decided that I wanted to get involved with his hobby as I do always enjoy watching him go out. I also decided to compromise with him because he knows I love snakes and doesn't complain about me keeping one even though he is not into my hobby that much. I will be going out kayaking for the very first time on Sunday weather permitting at a peaceful lake that is local to us. I am excited and can't wait to get out on the water.

Congrats of your first kayak! If you like nature at all you'll get more chances to see it in a quieter, lighter boat. Get a comfortable PFD (lifejacket) so you don't mind wearing it. I kayak, too, and the coolest thing I've caught a quick glimpse of was a bobcat. I hope you have lots of fun and discover an awesome new hobby.

I've kayaked a few times here on local rivers...one faster moving, the other very slow & lazy. It's a great way to take in the scenery & wildlife, so I prefer the
slower waters. I've been out on plenty of motorized boats on lakes, rivers & ocean, & I find that I don't care much for the noise or the speed...for me, being
on the water is being one with nature...I like the peace of paddling a kayak (if I'm not swimming, that is). I think you'll be very glad you're trying this.

Check your local laws, here is Texas you have to have a life jacket and sounding device (whistle) and lighting at night.

Do yourself a favor and take nothing with you on your first time out.
Learn your limits with the kayak then push it more till you fall out. Then practice self recovery.
I have seen too many people turtle and not know how to get back in.
Then practice your paddle stroke, a lot of people dog out cheaper kayaks because they don't track straight amd a bad stroke just makes it worse.
The best extra thing you can get is a paddle leash, it really sucks being in the creek without one.
After you are comfortable then start taking whatever else you want.

I love kayaking! I hope you end up liking it, kayaking is an awesome way to explore new places and do sight seeing. You almost always get to see some beautiful wildlife as well. What kind of kayak did you get, and are you going in the sea or a lake or river?

I got the Dagger Axis 10.5 and I am going out on a lake for my first time.

Practice in shallow water, like 5'ish.
You can sink that sit in kayak if you roll it.

Thank you, I will definitely take your advice. The lake that I am going to is generally pretty shallow.

The short kayak is not going to track great but I love mine.
The one in the photo, I have had it in every type of water you can imagine.
Its like learning to ride a bike, one you get comfortable with it push yourself more.
Also you can get small hand operated bilge pumps too just incase. Mine is velcroed in the front area inside. Before you go spending too much make sure you like it though.
