Can a BP be kept in a cool room with a heating pad as a sole heat source?

I want to know, can a ball python be kept in a (nearly) sealed top 30/40 gallon breeder tank with a heating pad, in a room that stays constantly at 70 degrees?


Will the belly heat provided from the heating pad be enough?

A friend of mine with a similar setup uses two large heating pads, one at 82*F the other at 90*F, because his wife isn't happy unless she is practically freezing.

The short answer: no

Heat mats are designed solely to provide a hot spot to aid in digestion and offer a temp gradient. They're not made to raise ambient temps.

Unless the room is steadily in the low-mid 80s you'll need an additional heat source.

So, in your situation you'll need a heat mat and one of the following:
A) heat lamp with bulbs (cheapest way, but need replacing often)
B) heat lamp with Ceramic Heat Emitter (CHE) (a little more expensive, lasts a lot longer)
C) Radiant Heat Panel (RHP) (the most expensive, but also most reliable and will last year's and years)

It's also VERY IMPORTANT to make sure ALL HEAT SOURCES ARE REGULATED BY A THERMOSTAT.

Don’t breeders keep ( and breed) them in little plastic tubs sat on heat mats or heat tape ??

I’ve no idea ( or experience) of how they’d have ceramic bulbs in a plastic tub

The rack below has a heat mat on the BACK-SIDE so I’ve no idea how that works ..

Most have a dedicated snake room with the whole room ambient temperature set around 80 so the tape is only needed to create a hot spot. In my case, I don't even need to run the extra heat in the summer because keeping the door to my snake room shut builds up enough heat. Racks are typically better insulated than a fish tank so the tape alone usually bumps up the whole tubs temperature.
