So sad

Well last night I got home and could smell something horrid coming from upstairs, I hadn't fed anyone this week so I feared the worst.
I went in the snake room and my 4yr old hypo Nicaraguan was dead on her side with a mouth full of bark, she had regurged a weener rat from last week and must of inhaled a mouth full of bark and choked on it, worse thing was it was her 4th birthday on yesterday too and was gonna take some nice pics of her, she not been ill or anything, I had gave her that extra rat last week as one of the small snakes was in she'd and refused, so I gave it her with out no problems
Im so upset about her dying , she was so nice and healthy

Awww I’m so sorry for both of you !!

I hate it when any creature dies .. [not to bad with humans lol ]

I found a drowned squirrel in our back garden on Saturday and it ruined my weekend..

I'm sorry for your loss. That was a great looking snake!

While bark in the lung might seem like the cause of death-it is possible the snake got bark in its mouth/throat during its final moments. The regurge and the bark in the mouth together may indicate some sort of seizure-it is possible that this was an unavoidable end.

I personally would necropsy the snake to examine the lung. If I found bark I would change substrate. That is just me...

Thanks, my snakes have been on bark for over ten years and never been A problem, but I had considered changing it now, I'm not going to lie, but this is the best thing for there humidity I've found and they would be on this kind of substrate in the jungle

Oh, this is awful news...I'm so sorry Richard. Honestly, I think that she only got bark in her mouth after she thrashed around some...I too doubt that it actually
caused her death, but whatever it was, it was much too soon. A snake can die from just a regurge, as far as I know...some of it can "go the wrong way" into the
lung & I suspect that is what caused her sad untimely death, since coughing things up isn't a talent that snakes have. Such rotten luck, hugs.
