    Struggling with Carlos

My 12 yr old albino boa since November last year had been pacing up and down his viv after the females.well decided to go off his food too.this was him in November
March time he developed a respiratory infection which by middle March he was all cleared up and He had a large rat every week.thought I was in the clear then he went into shed end of April and started wheezing again but I noticed his mouth was all drooling too, looked like mouth rot,I got into the vets last week and once he looked in his mouth there was a horrible ulcer,he asked if I wanted to put him down due to the amount of weight loss too,I owe to him to at least try .so I got a course of antibiotics.ive also been swabbing his mouth with diluted betadine, also been soaking him to keep him hydrated
He is nice and active and always at the glass when I go in,he doesn’t like the taste but I need to try
I’ve bumped up his temps too
    Anyone got any more ideas

Sounds like the ulcer/mouth rot was from pushing his face on his cage to get to the females...? Can you house him where their scent won't be an issue?

This can be so frustrating but I hope he turns around for you...especially since he's only 12. Wish I had more ideas, but besides swabbing his mouth & the
antibiotic injections & soaking for hydration, I can't think of much else, unless you want to tube-feed him to keep up his energy (& presumably his immune
system functioning), & that also depends on whether or not food of any kind is advisable att (some antibiotics don't mix well with food & snake may regurge).

Other than relocating is there a way you can Snake friendly mask the females scent? I honestly can't say it would work but you could try burning some incense and seeing if that helps out?

As long as you don't go overboard with a very chemical scent I don't think it will hurt the snakes. In my experience at least with incense and even some cleaning supplies as long as it is not directly in the cage my Balls and the one Boa I have seems to never really freak out in their tubs.

No idea if this will work but its an idea!

Thanks everyone, I keep swabbing his mouth morning and night and giving him a good soak to keep him hydrated, he did this about 3yrs ago and came thru, so fingers crossed he will again
I just hate to see him like this, he's nice and active still wich I'm pleased about, and he comes to the glass when I'm in there, I keep trying him with food but no luck yet

He may have a compromised/weaker immune system, possibly from genetics or age. It sounds like you are doing all you can, I don't have any other advice than what you are already doing. I hope things work out and he's on the mend soon.
There's not really much you can do to stop males from being active trying to get females, even in different rooms. Sometimes a change in cage type will help but not always.

I really hope he bounces back strong Rich. He's a gorgeous critter and obviously well cared for.
