    Egg Roll Theory

ok so i had my first season last year. 10 snakes, 9 virgins, 5 pairings, 3 took and 3 successful clutches. it was fun, nerve wracking and overall a very good experience from incubator build, drunken night pairings, egg building and laying, incubation and pipping, etc.

one of the most odd and funny moments was post-lay, i would always find 1 egg had rolled away from the rest of the eggs within the momma BP's coils. is this a common thing?

lemme show u what i'm talking about...

this is my Fire YB girl. seems like that 1 egg was gonna roll away. there were 6 eggs total in this clutch.

maybe that 1 egg was gonna roll all the way away if i pulled the eggs much later.

and this is my Pied girl on 6 eggs. one had rolled away completely.

    see:

and lastly my Super Cinny girl on 6 eggs.

no rolled egg? butt wait a minute!

    lol i don't think she's done! omg!

and a lil bit later, the 7th and last egg is a rolled egg!

so what happened here? 3 clutches from 3 virgin gurls w/ 3 rolled eggs? my working theory on egg rolls is that the last egg from the clutch is the one that rolls way. i think this is demonstrated by my Super Cinny above. i think her nature or muscle memory had her re-coil around the eggs she just laid but i had yoinked. they were not there but she was really hissy and it seemed like she still on guard for the 6 eggs she was originally wrapped around. the last egg seemed like it was laid/squirted out farther away or rejected and rolled away from a full egg coil. i think the egg roll is the last egg laid!

what do u think? what is your egg roll theory?

I say post a GoPro camera on the next laying and see how it happens. That’s pretty interesting.

Don't know about egg rolls (never had any but didn't breed BPs) but be careful not to disturb a snake that's still laying. (ie. find ways to be a lot more subtle)

yeah, of course i would never do that intentionally. i got home from work, spied her w/ eggs and thought she was done. surprise she had 1 more! i went to prep dinner and let her be and spied her later w/ the last egg roll.

i candled them all. i don't remember which pix i have were the egg rolls from the first 2 clutches, but this one is the last one from the Super Cinny. i marked it w/ L degrees.

    it candled fine.

unless u wait to pull the egg roll for days on end like if u were outta town and couldn't get to it, any healthy egg should do fine in proper artificial incubation. an egg roll would be more of an issue in the wild or any maternal incubation as it's rejection from the mom wouldn't give it the proper temps, humidity or protection to develop an hatch. it would eventually expire due to exposure before it could drown.
