Looks like a black rat snake to me? But its nose looks pointer and cheeks larger almost like a venomous species. Huh.

Re: Identify For Me
I’m on my road looking at it now. Keeping my distance until I get an ID. It’s flattening it’s hood out. About 12-14 inches long.

Scrap that, It's actually a black phase eastern hognose snake. Rear-fanged, but venom only as bad as a bee sting I believe.

Re: Identify For Me
I was leaning towards hognose as well. He was a tough guy for sure! He went into full defensive mode against my truck!

Cool black hog find..Virgina area by chance?
These critters have rear fangs but rarely bite. They will put on a good show and some will mock strike...they may even hit your hand with their head but rarely open their mouth. If you had persisted you may have gotten the playing dead show as well.
The fangs are far back in the mouth and wide apart...they love toads and frogs but if you have messed with either you have probably seen them inflate themselves with air...hogs will walk the critter into their mouth far enough to use the fangs to deflate the balloon. Neat snake.
Thanks for sharing.

South Georgia actually. About 30 minutes from Savannah. I wanted to pick it up and have a good look at it but I didn’t take a chance without a positive ID. Never seen one in the wild before. Very cool experience seeing it within sight of my own house.
